VILLAGE BOARD MEETING

The next Village Board meeting will be held  at 7 p.m. on Monday, September 21, 2009.  All meetings are open to the public and are handicap accessible.

 

TOWN OF COLONIE LANDFILL

The next Town of Colonie 2009 household hazardous drop-off   waste   date   is    October 7  -   4 p.m. – 7 p.m.

Menands School PTA is accepting orders for beautiful MUM plants-available in yellow, white, burgundy, purple, pink and orange (rust) - $7.00 each.  Please pre-order by calling Melissa Mitchell 512-4018 or Christina Pustay 449-8344 (evenings) or pick up an order form in the Menands School Office.  Orders must be placed and paid by September 18th.  Pick-up is Thursday, September 24th, 3 – 6:30 p.m. in the Menands School Parking Lot.  Plants not picked up by Monday, September 28th will be donated to the school!

 

MENANDS PUBLIC LIBRARY

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month.  Stop in and get The Card.  See what your library has to offer.  Fall themed drop in storyhours start Friday, September 18th at 10 a.m.  Children and their caregivers are welcome for stories, songs and crafts.  Saturday September 19th is International Talk Like A Pirate Day.  All kids who stop in and show off their swashbuckling lingo will receive a prize.  We will also be celebrating ALA’s Banned Books Week (9/26 to 10/1) this year with displays, a special movie presentation and a banned books reading for kids and families on Thursday October 1st  at 7 p.m.

Tuesdays at 1 p.m., the library will be showing a film staring either Marilyn Monroe or Jack Lemmon.

PANCAKE BREAKFAST

The REACH workcampers of Bethany Presbyterian Church will be hosting a pancake breakfast on Sunday, September 20, from 8 – 10:00 a.m.  During the breakfast pictures will be displayed from this year’s trip to Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.  A free will offering will be accepted to support next summer’s trip to Windsor, Maine.  All are invited!

 

MENANDS ROTARY OFFERS H, S. JUNIORS THE YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING AWARD

The Rotary Club of Menands is seeking applications from high school juniors who live in Menands for the Youth Leadership  Training Award.  Applicants who are selected will join other juniors from the Capital Region and will receive special leadership training.  RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) is a successful, dynamic and fun filled activity program, which is held in the area one Saturday each month from Oct. through May.  Completed

SPOTLIGHT ON MENANDS BUSINESS–SEPT. 2009

Our feature business for this month is the Parkside Preschool.

The Parkside Preschool is located at 21 North Lyon Avenue and is the only daycare center in Menands.  The School has been in operation for over 25 years and is a NYS licensed facility which operates year round to serve children from ages 2 years 9 months to 5 years old.  Children from all areas of the Capital District attend Parkside Preschool.

The School is under the direction of Debra A Horton and has a staff of 10 full and part time employees.  Parkside is sponsored by the Bethany Presbyterian Church and traces its association with the Church back to 1859 when the Menands Mission Sabbath School was created.

School policy is set by the Board of Directors, which includes two parents of youngsters attending the school.

Parkside is licensed to accommodate up to 39 children with an additional 10 in the Toddler Program.  The School offers an academic year curriculum modeled after the NYS Education Department pre-school standards for readiness skills for kindergarten.  During the Summer months, a combination of skills review as well as organized play activities are offered.  The School operates from 7 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. five days a week. Breakfast and lunch are provided daily.  Field trips or special event days are held once a month.

In 2006, the Parkside Preschool was recognized by Cornell University and the Capital District Childcare Coordinating Council as a Program of Excellence.

MENANDS FIRE COMPANY #1

The Menands Fire Company and Ladies Auxiliary Family Picnic will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2009 from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Ganser-Smith Park.  All members and their families are invited.  A sign-up sheet will  be   posted  in  the  Lounge  at  the Firehouse  or  call Diane Brunelle at 463-6312.  The fund drive mailing party will be held on Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at the firehouse.  A sign up sheet is on the board in the Lounge for anyone who can help out.  The next monthly meeting of the Menands Fire Company will be held on Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at 8:00 p.m.  All fire company members are invited to attend.

 

MENANDS FARMERS MARKET

The Farmers Market in Menands, is located on Broadway just south of Route 378. The Retail Market is open Saturdays 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. closed on Sundays. GARAGE SALE

The Sons Of  American Legion Squadron 1610 is holding a garage sale on Saturday, October 3, 2009 from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the North Albany American Legion Post located at 35 North First Street in North Albany.

The organization is asking for your support in this year’s fundraising effort.  Any donated items must be dropped off at the North Albany American Legion Post 1610 between 8 a.m. and 12 noon on October 3rd . You can make arrangements to have some items picked up iadvance.  If you have any questions please call Kevin Kennelly – 573-9244, Buzzy Harbour – 465-2836, Tim Lane – 465-8807 or Michael Conners – 365-7136. The Legion Post 1610 will provide food and beverages for sale and the Auxiliary will also have a  bake sale.

 

ANNUAL FAMILY FUN AND WALK FOR BREAST CANCER CURE DAY

Saturday, Oct. 3rd at Ganser-Smith Park in Menands there will be a walk beginning at noon (registration opens at 11:00)  $5 children, $10 adults & $30 family max.  Walk will be in the vicinity of the park and motorists are asked to be aware of walkers and dog owners are reminded to keep their dogs confined in compliance with the leash law during this event.  Live music, fun activities, food and basket raffle to follow the walk.  Contact Meg Grenier with any questions at 463-5196.

MENANDS SCHOOL 70’S REUNION

The date is set for October 10, 2009 at the Menands Ball Park (Ganser Smith Park) at 1:00 p.m..  The cost is $10.00 and covers hamburgers, hot dogs, sausage and peppers, soft drinks and coffee.  It would be appreciated if people could bring appetizers, salads or desserts.  We are still looking for representatives/volunteers from the classes of ’70, ’71, ’78 and ’79.  These volunteers would work with us to track down graduates in their class.  The next meeting will be held September 10, 2009, 7:00 p.m. at Poppy’s.  Contact Lauren Clemenzi at (basketballrocks42@hotmail.com) or Karen McGovern (kmcgovern@nycap.rr.com).

 

SENIOR CITIZEN NEWS

On October 16th the Menands Senior Citizen’s Club will go to Lake George for a cruise on the Lac du Saint Sacrament to see the colors change in the trees and have some delicious food from the buffet.  We will stop at the outlet shops on the way home.  The price is $22.00.  Call Gert at 462-1860 or Susan at 472-9022.  The deadline is September 24th.  Be at Bethany by 8:45 a.m.  The bus will leave at 9:15a.m. SHARP.

On November 3rd the Menands Senior Citizen’s Club will be going to the Turning Stone.  Cost $5.  Contact Diane at 465-3771 for reservations and information.
