The next Village Board meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, June 7, 2010. All meetings are open to the public and are handicap accessible.
The Board of Trustees of the Village of Menands will hold a Public Hearing at 7:00 P.M. Monday, June 7th, 2010 in the Municipal Building, 250 Broadway in said Village, pertaining to a request by the owners to change the zoning of 30 (SBL: 55.13-2-14) and 36 (SBL: 55.13-2-16) Wards Lane from R-2 Single Family/Twin Villa to R-4 Multi Family. Such Public Hearings are open to the public and are accessible to the handicapped. All are encouraged to attend or to present comments in writing.
VILLAGE OFFICE
The Village Office will be closed on Monday, May 31st due to the observance of Memorial Day.
TRASH SCHEDULE
There will be no trash pickup on Monday, May 31st. Monday’s pick up will be on Tuesday, June 1st and Tuesday’s pick up will be on Wednesday, June 2nd. THERE WILL BE NO SPECIAL PICK UP ON WEDNESDAY.
BUILDING PERMITS
Please call the Village Building Department at 434-2922 if you are planning any construction, pool, roof or shed installation, etc. Be advised it takes approximately one week from receiving an application to the issuance of a building permit.
MENANDS FIRE COMPANY NEWS
The monthly meeting of the Menands Fire Company #1 will be held on Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at Ganser Smith Park. Board of Director’s Meeting at 6:00 p.m. Regular Business Meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. All fire company members are urged to attend.
MENANDS FIRE COMPANY AUXILIARY NEWS
On June 9th, the auxiliary will hold their June meeting and picnic in Ganser-Smith Park. Meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. with picnic to follow. The telephone committee will be calling to ask what each member will be bringing to the picnic. Members will be notified if there is a change.
MILITARY APPRECIATION PICNIC
On Sunday, June 13, 2010 (Flag Day) at Ganser-Smith Memorial Park from 3:00 to 7:00 P.M. Please show your appreciation of our military by displaying your American Flag and yellow ribbons at your home and by joining us at the picnic. There will be live entertainment, food and beverages and fun activities for the entire family. Any questions please contact Meg Grenier at 463-5196.
ALBANY EVENING GARDEN CLUB
There are 2 garden tours scheduled. May 27 meet at Littles Lake @ 5:15 p.m. to car pool to Slingerlands. June 1st @ 7 p.m. garden tour followed by a short meeting. For directions and more info. call Carol at 462-6046. All are welcome and bring a friend.
MENANDS PUBLIC LIBRARY
On June 2nd, 3rd and possibly the 4th all library patrons of the Menands Public Library must use their library card! During those two or three days, the library will not be able to check out items using only your name. You will not be able to renew your items either on-line or in person. Also, you will not be able to make interlibrary loan requests. You will be able to check things out only if you have your library card with you! The reason why is because all the public libraries in Albany and Rensselaer will be upgrading their on-line systems.
MENANDS SENIOR CITIZENS
On June 3rd, we will be ordering pizza from Poppy’s Place for lunch. Cost is $1 per slice. You must make reservations and prepay. Contact Mary at 432-4508.
On June 24th, we will have our annual picnic in the Ganser-Smith Park from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. It will be catered by POPPY’S PLACE. The menu will consist of vegetable tray and dip/snacks, grilled split marinated chicken breast with or without barbeque sauce, salads, ice tea, lemonade, coffee and dessert. Cost is $12. See Mary to make reservations and prepay.
On July 14th, we will be traveling to the famous HU-KE-LAU, Chicopee, Mass. for Two Lobsters and a Crab. “The Crab is the erasable Fr. Patrick Aloysius Misgivings.” The meal will be a choice between 2 steamed lobsters with drawn butter or prime rib of beef. Both entrees are served with clam chowder, potato, vegetable and rolls. Cost $54. Bus leaves Ganser-Smith Park at 8:45 a.m. Tour leaders are Betty and Marge.
On August 25th, we are going to NYC to the Mont Blanc Restaurant for lunch. After lunch, we will see the “Jersey Boys.” A story about the fabulous 60’s rock group, The Four Seasons. Cost $85. Bus leaves Ganser-Smith Park at 7:45 a.m. Diane and Betty are the tour leaders.
REMINDER: Come sign up in person and pre-pay on any trips that we are offering at our Thursday senior get-togethers at the Bethany Presbyterian Fellowship Hall between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL
Bethany Presbyterian Church is having its annual Strawberry Festival at Ganser-Smith Park on Menand Road in Menands Wednesday, June 16 from 4:00 p.m. to dusk. Fresh picked strawberries for strawberry shortcake with fresh whipped cream or strawberries with ice cream. We will also have char broiled hamburgers and hot dogs, salads, baked beans and beverages. Don’t forget to bring your lawn chair and “set” awhile and enjoy the toe tapping music of the Uncle Sam’s Barbershop Chorus of Troy followed by the Tri-County Banjo Band. Bring the whole family. Rain or shine!
BEAUTIFICATION/PARKS COMMITTEE
Please join your neighbors at a meeting to be held on Thursday, June 10th at 6:30 p.m. in the Village Municipal Building. Topics of discussion will include progress on previous projects, current plans and new ideas to improve our parks and beautify our village. Unable to attend? Announcing the Third Annual St. Agnes Cemetery Photo Contest 2010 The deadline is August 15th. Cash prizes will be awarded at a reception to be held at the Colonie Memorial Town Hall on September 22nd. Amateur and professional photographers are invited to take photos of sculpture, artwork, nature and views with Historic St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands. “TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME”
The Menands Junior Baseball and softball League, in partnership with the Tri City Valley Cats, invite you to a “League Night Fundraiser” on Saturday, June 26th at the Joe Bruno Stadium on the HVCC Campus. Come watch the Valley Cats take on the Lowell Spinners at 7:00 p.m. Enjoy a great game, meet the mascot, plus enjoy a fireworks display afterwards, all for the low ticket price of $5.00. The Menands School PTA would like to thank our wonderful community for all the points we received from the Tools for Schools Program from Price Chopper. Thanks to all of you, our school will be able to obtain some wonderful, resourceful and fun equipment.
The Menands School PTA would like to thank all of those individuals who had a huge part in the success of our recent Garage Sale. We could not have done it without the students, parents and members of our great community.

BOATING SAFETY COURSE – JUNE 5
Safe boating and legal practices are taught in this course introducing boating to all. Students completing course earn a NYS Boater Safety Certificate. Ages 14 and above are required to complete this 8 hour instructor administered course and exam. This is for personal watercraft. Operators aged 10-18 will be permitted to operate a boat by themselves without a person 18 or older. Open to all with photo ID. Course fee is $30. Adults pay a mandatory fee of $10 to NYS Parks and Recreation. Proceeds benefit Menands Rotary for their scholarship fund. Course is taught at Menands Fire Hall (above firehouse) Saturday June 5th at 9:00 a.m. – 5 p.m. Boy Scouts will provide a light lunch for $5. To pre-register (no Walk ins). Contact
