VILLAGE BOARD MEETING

The next   Village  Board  meeting   will  be  held  at        7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 17, 2009.   All meetings are open to the public and are handicap accessible.

 

ZONING BOARD OF APPEALS

A public hearing will be held on Thursday, February 12, 2009 at 7:00 P.M. in the Village Municipal Building for the purpose of considering the following application for a variance:

Menands Mobile, 116 Broadway is requesting a variance for two illuminated signs at 116 Broadway.

Such public hearings are open to the public and are accessible to the handicapped.  All are encouraged to attend or to present comments in writing.

TRASH HOLIDAY SCHEDULE

The Village Office, Village Court and D.P.W. will be closed on Monday, February 16th for Presidents’ Day.  Monday’s trash pick up will be Tuesday, February 17th and Tuesday’s pick up will be on Wednesday, February 18th.  Recycling days will remain the same.  There will be NO SPECIAL PICK UP ON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 18TH.

  CENSUS RECRUITING

The US Census Bureau is recruiting thousands of temporary part-time census takers for the 2010 Census in the Greater Capital District.  They will be testing at the Menands Public Library, 6 Lyons Avenue on  Thursday, Feb. 5 at 6 p.m., Friday, Feb. 6 at 2 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 7 at 11 a.m. Call 866-861-2010 toll free, or 518-362-2170 to apply.

2009FATHER-DAUGHTER VALENTINE’S DANCE

The 12th Annual Father-Daughter Valentine’s Dance will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2009 from 6 –9 p.m. at Bethany Presbyterian Church (at the corner of N. Lyons and Menands Road).  This is an opportunity for fathers and ‘father figures’ to have a special and memorable evening of fun and dancing with their daughters.  Admission at the door is $20. Free father-daughter portraits will be provided. We’re asking each family to bring a snack or dessert.  Please call Elizabeth LaPoint (669-2131) about food or to help in the kitchen at the dance.  If you can help decorate the night before, please call Steve at 463-2606.

 

“MENANDS CARES”

Supports the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society.  A bottle/can drive will take place on Saturday, February 7th to benefit the Humane Society.  Either drop off your donation at the Ganser-Smith Park between noon and 2:00 P.M. or leave your recyclables in plain view by your house to be picked up by members of the “Menands Cares” Committee.  Any questions, please contact Meg Grenier at 463-5196.

 

SPOTLIGHT ON MENANDS BUSINESS-FEB. 2009

Our feature business this month is Poppy’s Place, located at 327 Broadway, Menands.

Poppy’s Place, formerly the Village Pub, was founded by Menands residents, Larry and Pat Henderson in 1974 and at one time or another employed each of their six children.  Since his passing several years ago, one of their daughters, Debbie, has been joined by her husband, Nick DiBiase, to own and operate the family business.

The business employs eight full and part-time employees and is open from 11 A.M. until midnight from Monday through Friday and from 12 noon to midnight on Saturday.   Poppy’s Place is generally closed on Sundays.

A full menu for lunch or dinner is available each day and is supplemented by daily specials.  Homemade soups are featured daily as well as specialty sandwiches.  Poppy’s has a full range of pub food including pizza, wings, and other items.  Daily drink specials are offered and Happy Hour prices are in effect daily from 3 P.M. to 7 P.M.

Poppy;s also offers on and off premises catering in the Capital District Area as well as delivery services throughout Menands, parts of Albany, North Greenbush and Watervliet.

Poppy’s caters the Menands Business Breakfasts that are sponsored by the Village Board and are held each May and October in the Firehouse Meeting Hall.

Poppy’s can be reached at 427-8750.  Any business that would like the daily specials faxed to their office need only call.  Be sure to stop in soon at Poppy’s and when you do remember to park behind the building.

 

MENANDS ST. PATRICK’S CLUB

Join the Menands St. Patrick’s Club for an all you can eat Sweetheart Breakfast!  Sunday, February 8th from 8 a.m. to 12 noon at the Menands Firehouse.  Eggs, pancakes, bacon,  sausage, corned beef hash, home fries, Irish Soda Bread, Danish, pastries, doughnuts, coffee, tea and juices are being offered.  Adults: $7, Seniors: $6 and children 5 yrs. and up $5. We are inviting anyone who attends this event to please bring a canned good item for the Food Pantries of the Capital District. Because of the breakfast,  the meeting on February 8th will be at 1 p.m.  We will also pick Miss Colleen and take pictures at this meeting.  New members are always welcome. MISS COLLEEN CONTEST

Any Village girl, 9th grade or older, may enter with their parent’s permission.  Drawing will be held at the meeting on February 8th.  Miss Colleen and her court will represent Menands in the Albany Parade on March 14th and host the dinner dance held at the firehouse that evening.  Please fill out the entry form below and mail (or drop it off to): Menands St. Patrick’s Club, 250 Broadway, Menands, N.Y. 12204.  Entries must be received by February 7th.

POMS POMS

Any Menands girls (grade 5 and up) who wish to participate as Pom Pom girls in the Albany St. Patrick’s Parade on March 14th , are asked to sign up at Menands School or call Heidi Quackenbush at 783-7205.  If there are grade 4 girls interested, a parent or guardian must accompany them in the parade.

If the school is closed due to inclement weather (a snow day) there will be no open gym that evening.

MENANDS SENIOR CITIZENS

A trip is planned for St. Patrick’s Day, Tuesday, March 17th to Beck’s Grove.  Here we’ll have an Irish Buffet and show.  Cost is $42.  Payment is due by March 5th.  Call Peg (463-0735) or Marge (434-2759) for reservations.  Be sure to plan for a “green day”!!

Mary E. Magguilli of Menands from the Colonie Senior Citizens Advisory Committee will be around at the Thursday meetings and listening to suggestions and requests of our senior clubs.

 

YOUTH ORGANIZATION

The youth organization is hosting an ice skating field trip at Swinburne Skating Rink on Monday, February 9th , 2009.  Please note there has been a change on the day and time!!  We will be meeting at the firehouse at 4:00 p.m. and returning around 6:30 p.m.  The cost is $5.00.  Chaperones and bus transportation will be available.  Please sign up at the Village Office by February 5th.  Contact Brianna DiBiase 469-7726 for more information.  Hope to see you there!!

FREE HEALTH FAIR

St. Joan of Arc is sponsoring a Health Fair on Saturday, Feb. 28th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Open to the Public.  The church is located at 76 Menand  Road, (not 378) Menands.
