SPOTLIGHT ON MENANDS BUSINESS--April, 2010

Our feature business for April is the Simmons Machine Tool Corporation.

Simmons Machine Tool Corporation was founded in 1910 in Albany and is located at 55 Broadway, Menands (the official mailing address is 1700 North Broadway, Albany).  The company is part of the Niles-Simmons Hegenscheidt Group, widely known as the NSH Group.  NSH has operations in Germany, China, Russia, India, South Africa, Australia and Mexico.  In addition to the Menands location, NSH has a facility in Sterling Heights, Michigan.

The company employs 95 people at the Menands location under the direction of President and Chief Operating Officer David William Davis.  Since 1984, Simmons has focused on the railway industry and currently offers complete turnkey production lines around the world.  Turnkey projects refer to the manufacture of railway wheel sets configured for production of new wheels or maintenance of existing sets.  Simmons today provides state of the art under floor wheel lathe profiling technology as well as laser measurement of wheel sets in service.

Simmons competes worldwide and is very much impacted by fluctuations in the international currency markets.  The artificial currency suppression by the Chinese government has put Simmons at a competitive disadvantage of up to thirty percent on its sales in China.  In response to this, top management of the company reached out to U. S. Senator Charles Schumer who has developed legislation to combat currency manipulation.  The Senator held a press conference on March 31 at the Menands facility to explain the legislation and how it will benefit Simmons and other U .S. companies in worldwide markets.

This year is especially significant for Simmons Machine Tool as the company will be celebrating its 100th birthday of its founding here in Menands.  As a result, the company is very interested in collecting any anecdotal material or memorabilia with a connection to the early years of its existence.  If you have anything of interest or know someone who does, please contact Simmons at 462-5431.

The next time you ride an Amtrak train or hear a freight train passing through Menands you can probably be assured that the wheel sets on the train were serviced by Simmons technology.
