VILLAGE BOARD MEETING

The next Village Board meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 4, 2011. All meetings are open to the public and are handicap accessible.

 

PAVILION RESERVATIONS BEGAN 3-1-2011

All Village residents, tax paying businesses and organizations that are based within the village, are able to reserve the pavilion at Ganser-Smith Park by stopping in the Village Office Monday thru Friday 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.  A $100 refundable deposit will be required at the time of your reservation.  Reservations for use by non-village parties sponsored by a village resident will be accepted April 1, 2011.

 

 DUMPSTER RESERVATIONS BEGIN MARCH 30

To make a reservation for the dumpster, you need to come to the Village Office (8 a.m. – 4 p.m.); we cannot take calls for the reservations.  Payment of  $75.00 will be due at  time of making your reservation. 

 

VILLAGE’S RIGHT-OF-WAY

Anything that you might have in the Village’s right-of-way, such as a basketball hoop, should be moved.  The Village will not be responsible for damage to any items left in the Village’s right-of-way.

 

WEIGHT & SIZE LIMIT

Please limit the weight of filled trash cans and biodegradable bags to 40 lbs. for the safety of our crew.  Maximum allowable size of receptacles is 45 gallons.  If these weight & size limits are exceeded, bags or receptacles will NOT be picked up. Leaves and grass should be bagged or placed in a receptacle marked compostable.  Branches, limbs, etc. should be in 3 ft. lengths and bundled.  Do NOT put any dirt in the biodegradable bags or receptacles.  Pick up will begin Monday, April 4, 2011.

 

TOWN OF COLONIE LANDFILL

The next Town of Colonie 2011 household hazardous drop-off waste date is April 20th  from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.  Information and flyers are available at the Village Hall or call 783-2827.

 

EARTH DAY SPRING CLEAN UP

SAVE THE DATE APRIL 16TH

The Earth Day Spring Clean Up will be conducted on Saturday April 16th between 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.  Volunteers will be asked to meet at Ganser-Smith Park at 9:30 a.m.  If you have any questions, please call Tim Lane at: 465-8807.

 

PARKSIDE PRESCHOOL

Parkside PreSchool and The Lyon Cubs at Bethany Presbyterian Church are accepting registrations. They are a licensed daycare and prekindergarten program open from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for children 3 – 5 years of age.  The program provides breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack. The Lyon Cubs provide for children ages 18 months to 3 years.  Classes are Monday thru Friday 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.  Contact Parkside Preschool at 449-2999.

 

MENANDS FIRE COMPANY NEWS

The Menands Fire Co. will hold the annual memorial service to honor our departed members on Sunday, April 3rd 2011 at 7 P.M.  All members and family of deceased members are invited.

The next meeting of the Menands Fire Co. will be on Tuesday, April 5, 2011.  Elections for Line and Civil Officers will take place at this meeting.  All fire company members are urged to attend.

The annual Fire Co. and Ladies Auxiliary Installation Dinner will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at Franklin Terrace (old Mario’s) 126 Campbell Avenue in Troy. Cocktail hour begins at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m.  Dinner choices are Filet Mignon, Chicken Marsala or Salmon en croute.  Sign-up is on the board in the Lounge at the firehouse.  Sign-up deadline is April 12, 2011.  All members and their spouse and/or guest are invited at no charge.  Don’t miss the chance to enjoy an elegant evening out and show your support for the Fire Co.

MENANDS FIRE COMPANY LADIES AUXILIARY

The next meeting of the Ladies Auxiliary will be Wednesday, April 13th at 7:00 p.m.  Agenda will be election of officers.

 

LENTEN SOUP SALE

Bethany Presbyterian Church will be offering its second soup, Turkey Vegetable, on Friday, April 1st and the third and final soup, Corn Chowder, on April 15th during the Lenten season.  The price of soup will be $5/quart.  Homemade breads will also again be available at $3.25/loaf.  Last year, we frequently sold out within the first hour.  Consider reserving your order ahead of time.  You may order in advance by calling Judy Blair at 465-3295 or by filling out a coupon (found at the back of the sanctuary at Bethany or at the entry to Folensbee Hall) or you may just drop in. Soup will be available for pick up between 3:00 and 5:30 p.m. on above mentioned dates.

 

HUDSON SHORES ROTARY CLUB NEWS

The Hudson Shores Rotary Club will be sponsoring its Giffy’s Spring Chicken BBQ dinner (EAT IN or TAKE OUT) at the Menands School on Wednesday, April 13 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.  Cost will be $9 per complete meal.  This event is being coordinated with The Menands School’s Scholastic Family Shopping Event.

As a result of combining the Menands and Watervliet Rotary Clubs, the Club is seeking a new banner design.

Students in grades 6-8 in public school districts or private schools enrolling in this contest must do so through their school administration, art or other teachers within the club’s

Service area of Menands, Watervliet, Green Island and Maplewood.  The deadline for the entries is Thursday, April 14.  A prize of $100 will be awarded to the winning banner submission. Further information can be obtained from HSR member Ron Miller at 463-8144 (H/O).

 

MENANDS SCHOOL BOARD OF EDUCATION

The Menands School Board of Education will meet on April 11, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. in the library of the School

 

MENANDS PUBLIC LIBRARY

Storytime will be presented on Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. for the youngest set.

The Menands Public Library’s Tuesday at 1 o’clock Spring film series will be about doing business in America as seen by Hollywood.

April  5  -  The Devil And Miss Jones (1941) directed by  Sam Wood.  Owner John P. Merrick (Charles Coburn) decides to go undercover to find out why his employees  Mary Jones (Jean Arthur) and Union Organizer Joe O’Brien (Robert Cummings) dislike him.

April 12 -  The Pajama Game (1957) directed by Abbott & Doen.  Employees of Sleeptite Pajama Factory demand a $.07 1/2 per hour rise. Complications arise when “Babe” Williams (Doris Day) and shop foreman Sid Sorokin (John Raitt) fall in love.

 

MENANDS ELEMENTARY PLAYSPACE

The time has come, twenty two years later, to retire the wooden playground.  There are exposed rusted nails and slivers are a daily occurrence from the aged wood.

A steering committee has formed to help guide the 2nd generation erect a new playground.  The steering committee meets monthly.  We encourage community-oriented people, parents, grandparents, as well as local businesses to join in our effort.  Currently, our focus is: grants/funding; removal of the current structure and the design of a unique playspace.  Please contact Melissa Mitchell to find out how you can help.  E-mail at Melissa.m.Mitchell@hotmail.com or call 512-4018.

 

TO THE QUALIFIED VOTERS OF THE MENANDS UNION FREE SCHOOL DISTRICT.

Registration will be on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the main lobby of the Menands School.  District residents who have voted once in the last four years need not register on May 11.

A Public Hearing on the proposed 2011-2012 Budget for the Menands Union Free School District and the Menands Public Library shall be held at the Menands School on Monday, May 9, 2011 at 6:30 p.m.  The budgets will be available for review on May 3, 2011 at Menands School.

The annual meeting of the qualified voters of the Menands Union Free School District, will be held on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 between the hours of 12:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at the Menands School on the following items:  To adopt the annual budget of the Menands UFSD.  To elect one Board of Education member to a 5-year term.  To approve the proposition to expand monies from Capital Reserve Fund for the purchase of playground equipment and sidewalk replacement not to exceed $91,031.96.  To adopt the annual budget of the Menands Public Library.  To elect one Library Board of Trustees member to a 5-year term.

Nominating petitions for the Board of Education and Library Board of Trustees seats may be obtained from the District Clerk, at Menands School.  Completed petitions are due by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, April 18, 2011.

Applications for absentee ballots will be obtainable between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday from Patricia Miller, District Clerk, at Menands School.  Completed applications for absentee ballots must be received by the District Clerk at least 7 days prior to the vote if the ballot is to be mailed to the voter, or the day before the election if the ballot is to be delivered personnally to the voter.  Absentee ballots must be received by the District Clerk not later than 5:00 p.m. on May 17, 2011.

 

Items to be included in the next edition of the Menands Activities dated April 15, 2011 WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED IN THE VILLAGE OFFICE AFTER 9 A.M. Monday April 11,  2011.
