SPOTLIGHT ON MENANDS BUSINESS – OCT. 2010

Our feature business for October is News Channel 13, WNYT Albany.

WNYT originally began serving the Capital District airways in 1954 as WTRI with studios and transmitter site on Bald Mountain just outside of Troy.  The station moved to its present location at 715 North Pearl Street in 1955.  The station was sold to Sondering Broadcasting and the call letters were changed to WAST.

In 1979, WAST was purchased by Viacom International and in 1981, the call letters were changed to the present WNYT.  In that same year, the station became an affiliate of the National Broadcasting Company.  In 1995, Paramount, another Viacom company, became parent to WNYT.

In the Fall of 1996, the station became acquired by Hubbard Broadcasting, Inc., a privately held company based in Minnesota.

The station currently employs 110 people, most of whom work full time under the direction of Vice President and General Manager, Stephen Baboulis.  After its first year as an NBC affiliate, WYNT emerged with more attractive audience deliveries in virtually every area on the station, both local and network and the trend continues.

Digital broadcasting began in October, 2003 as WNYT-DT.  The antenna for this transmission is located in the Town of New Scotland and is shared with five other stations.

The station is considering adding additional digital broadcasting services  The station continues to expand its website at www.wnyt.com.  Check out the website to learn more about our Menands based television station.
