VILLAGE BOARD MEETING

The next Village Board meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, October 4, 2010.  All meetings are open to the public and are handicap accessible.

 

HOLIDAY SCHEDULE CHANGES

Due to the observance of Columbus Day, the Village Office & Court will be closed on Monday, October 11th and there will be no trash pick up.  Monday’s garbage pick up will be Tuesday, October 12th and Tuesday’s pick up will be Wednesday, October 13th.  THERE WILL BE NO SPECIAL PICK UP ON WEDNESDAY.

 

LEAF MACHINE

Beginning Wednesday, October 20th thru Friday, December 3rd – weather permitting.  The DPW will pick up leaves that are raked on the edge of the road/street (DPW cannot pickup leaves not on the street).  Mulched leaves and grass should be bagged.  Branches, limbs, etc. should be cut in 3 ft. lengths.  We do NOT accept any dirt in the biodegradable bags.  Please remember that it takes DPW anywhere from 7 to 14 days to go thru the Village depending on the amount of leaves at the side of the road.

 

TOWN OF COLONIE LANDFILL

The next Town of Colonie 2010 household hazardous drop-off waste date is Oct. 6th  – 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.  Must call for pre-registration.  Information is  available at the Village Hall or call 783-2827.

 

MENANDS FIRE COMPANY NEWS

The monthly meeting of the Menands Fire Company #1 will be held on Tuesday, October 5, 2010 at 8:00 p.m. at the Firehouse.  All fire company members are invited to attend.

 

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK – OPEN HOUSE

An Open House will be held on Wednesday, October 6, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Firehouse.  All Village residents and their families are invited to attend.

 

MENANDS FIRE CO. LADIES AUXILIARY NEWS

On October 3rd from 2-4 p.m. the auxiliary will have a Past President Life Member Appreciation luncheon.  All members are encouraged to attend.

The regular monthly meeting of the Ladies Auxiliary will be October 13th  at 7:00 p.m.  All members are  urged to attend as we will be voting on a change in our bi-laws.   There will be a speaker at this meeting discussing Breast Cancer Awareness. 

 

HISTORIC ST. AGNES CEMETERY OF MENANDS

Drawing lesson offered Oct. 15 from 1 – 3 p.m. in Historic St. Agnes Cemetery.  Artist Randi Bentley will provide one on one instruction in architectural and nature drawing using classical-style mausoleums and various types of trees within the Cemetery as subjects.  Cost $10. CARPOOLING EVENT

The Friends of Pruyn are planning a trip to Hancock Shaker Village on Thursday, October 14, 2010.  The price of admission is $20 per person and will include a 2-hour “Behind the Scenes” tour from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  There is a café on site if you wish to buy your lunch.  A musical performance will follow at 2 p.m.  There is also a wonderful gift shop on site…please join us.  We will depart from the lower lot of Pruyn House at 9:45 sharp!  This is not a bus trip…we will be carpooling over.  Not enough people were interested in the bus option.  For further information or to make a reservation, please call 783-1435.

 

HUDSON SHORES ROTARY SEEKING JUNIORS FOR LEADERSHIP TRAINING SCHOLARSHIP

Hudson Shores Rotary serves the Menands and Watervliet areas.  Each year the Rotary District serving Albany and it’s surrounding counties offers High School Juniors an opportunity to participate in RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards).  On one Saturday a month, from November to April, a group from the entire 9 county area meets for a series of activities, speakers, discussions and challenges.  Applications are available at the Menands Village Office and Menands School.  The application deadline has been extended until October 15.  ALL completed applications must be returned to the Menands Village Office no later than noon on Oct. 15.  If you have any questions please call Mel Horowitz at 449-8817.

 

COMMUNITY WALK

In support of the fight against Breast Cancer, please join us for a community walk, followed by a day of fun, with food, raffles and family activities at Ganser Smith Memorial Park, Sunday, October 17th.  Registration begins at 11:30 ($5 per child/$10 per adult/$30 family max).  Walk begins at 12:30.  Any questions please contact Meg Grenier @ 463-5196.

 

MENANDS SCHOOL BOARD OF EDUCATION

The Menands School Board of Education will meet on  October 18, 2010  at 6:30 p.m. in the library of the school.

 

MENANDS SENIOR CITIZENS

On October 19th, we will go to the PLATZL BRAHAUS, Pomona, N.Y. for an “OCTOBERFEST.”  Upon arrival, coffee, tea, scones and homemade donuts will be served.  Beer, soda and cider will be served until 5:00 p.m.  Lunch at noon.  Dinner Choices are Roasted Half Chicken, Roasted Pork or Sauerbraten. A German Oompah Band and Folk Dancing are the featured entertainment. There is a German gift shop and bakery on the premises. Hot German Pretzels will be served at 4:00 p.m. Cost for all this is only $40.  See Peggy or Marge.

On November 9th,  we will once again try our luck at TURNING STONE CASINO, Verona, N.Y. Package includes:  $25 free play in casino or $20.00 bingo bucks and $5 toward food.  Cost $10.  See Diane L.

 

Reminder:  Come in person to prepay and sign up at Bethany Church Hall for any of the trips on Thursdays from 10:00 to 2:00 p.m.

  

MENANDS PUBLIC LIBRARY

Library’s fall film series will focus on Hollywood’s Dangerous Ladies:  Ava Gardner, Rita Hayworth and Glenn Close.  These stars have made a career by making trouble.  Especially for the men who love them.

Oct. 5th  -  Mogambo – No one is tougher than Ava.  Not even Clark Gable.  With  Grace Kelly.  Directed by John Ford.

Oct. 12th  -  Strawberry Blonde – biff (Jimmy Cagney) thinks he loves Virginia (Rita) but, thankfully, he is out of her league.  With Olivia de Havilland and Jack Carson.

 

BOY SCOUT TROOP 99

The Scouts of Menands Troop 99 are collecting returnable bottles and cans to help offset the cost of summer camp.  Please help by donating.  For your convenience we have a drop off bin at Little’s Lake (corner of 377 and 378).  All monies raised will help the scouts attend summer camp.  The Drive will continue through December 4th.  Thank you in advance for your support.

 

MENANDS YOUTH BASKETBALL

Youth Basketball Registration:  Village of Menands Boys & Girls 3rd thru 8th Grade – Wed. 10/6 & Thurs. 10/7 – 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. @ Menands School Gym entrance.  Reg. $20 per player or $30 per family.  Uniforms if necessary available for purchase.

 

New this year!  Coaches will conduct ‘pre-season’ workouts for new and returning players.  The basketball workouts at Menands School will help players work on fundamentals and give new boys and girls the opportunity to check out the team and coaches.
