VILLAGE BOARD MEETING
The next Village Board meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 2, 2011. All meetings are open to the public and are handicap accessible.
NOTICE TO ALL RESIDENTS
Due to the number of recent structure fires in the village, please be sure you have working smoke detectors in your home.

WATER METER READING SET TO BEGIN
Saturday, May 2, 2011 the Department of Public Works will begin reading water meters in the Village.
HYDRANT FLUSHING BEGINS
On Monday, May 23, 2011 the Water Department will begin the yearly flushing of the water system. All flushing of hydrants will be conducted between the hours of 7 A.M. and 3 P.M. Residents might notice discoloration in their water and should be aware this is normal and not harmful. However, residents are cautioned to check their water before doing laundry. Simply by letting the faucets run will clear up the discoloration after the flushing is completed each day.
BUILDING PERMITS
Please call the Village Building Department at 434-2922 if you are planning any construction, pool, roof or shed installation, etc. Be advised it takes approximately one week from receiving an application to the issuance of a building permit.
VILLAGE’S RIGHT-OF-WAY
Anything that you might have in the Village’s right-of-way, such as a basketball hoop, should be moved. The Village will not be responsible for damage to any items left in the Village’s right-of-way.
WEIGHT & SIZE LIMIT
Please limit the weight of filled trash cans and biodegradable bags to 40 lbs. for the safety of our crew. Maximum allowable size of receptacles is 45 gallons. If these weight & size limits are exceeded, bags or receptacles will NOT be picked up.
Leaves and grass should be bagged or placed in a receptacle marked compostable. Branches, limbs, etc. should be in 3 ft. lengths and bundled. Do NOT put any dirt in the biodegradable bags or receptacles.
PARKSIDE PRESCHOOL
Parkside PreSchool and The Lyon Cubs at Bethany Presbyterian Church are accepting registrations. They are a licensed daycare and prekindergarten program open from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for children 3 – 5 years of age. The program provides breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack. The Lyon Cubs provide for children ages 18 months to 3 years. Classes are Monday thru Friday 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Contact Parkside Preschool at 449-2999.
MENANDS FIRE COMPANY NEWS
The next meeting of the Menands Fire Co. will be on Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at 8:00 p.m. All fire company members are invited to attend.
MENANDS FIRE COMPANY LADIES AUXILIARY
The next meeting of the Menands Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary will be on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at 7:00 p.m.. We will play a Trivia Game afterwards.
RUMMAGE/BAKE SALE/ LUNCH
Bethany Presbyterian Church is holding its annual rummage sale on Saturday, May 14, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The REACH youth will be selling baked goods. A light luncheon will be served. Persons interested in donating items for the sale should call the church at 463-8217 or Paula Murphy at 465-6361 to arrange a time to drop off the donated items.
SPRING PLANT SALE
Bethany Presbyterian Church will be holding a spring plant sale in conjunction with their annual rummage sale on Saturday, May 14, 2011 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you would like to preorder (deadline May 5) your plants or see a list of plants available, please contact Kathy Terpening at 436-4196 or email at kcterpl@nycap.rr.com.
MENANDS PUBLIC LIBRARY
Storytime will be presented on Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. for the youngest set.
The Menands Public Library’s Tuesday at 1 o’clock Spring film series will be about doing business in America as seen by Hollywood.

May 10 The Palm Beach Story (1942) Directed by Preston Sturges. The idle rich live in a different world.
MENANDS SENIOR CITIZENS NEWS
On May 17, 2011, we are going to attend “Paddy and Bridget’s Wedding”, which takes place at Gavin’s Irish Country Inn, East Durham, N.Y. A reception follows the ceremony at 12:00 noon. A choice of roast beef or chicken breast will be served, followed by music and dancing. Cost is $31.
On June 14, 2011, we are planning to have lunch at the Red Lion Inn, visit The Norman Rockwell Museum and the nearby Botanical Garden, all in Stockbridge, Ma. Total cost for all $49.
On July 12, 2011, we have reservations for a luncheon cruise on beautiful Racquette Lake on the S.S. Durant, afterward we will go to the nearby Great Camp Sagamore, which was owned by the Vanderbilt family. Cost is $48.
All of our trips leave from the Ganser-Smith Park, Menands Road, Menands, N.Y. Check your receipt for the time. If you are interested in a trip, please attend any Thursday senior get-together at the Bethany Fellowship Hall between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 P.M. Anyone signed up for a trip, but unable to make it, inform the tour leader immediately.
UMBRELLA OF COLONIE
Umbrella of Colonie is a service of Colonie Senior Service Centers that gives elderly homeowners the help they need to live safely and independently in their home. Umbrella connects senior homeowners with retired, trustworthy handymen who can perform minor home repairs and maintenance at a reasonable cost. Umbrella of Colonie’s main focus is on fixing small repairs before they become major problems. Types of services available include basic home repairs, light carpentry painting, lawn mowing and garden work and more. Call Lauren at 459-7152 for more information or email

ALBANY EVENING GARDEN CLUB
The next meeting of the Garden Club will be May 3rd. We will have a slide presentation of various member’s gardens.
HISTORIC ST. AGNES CEMETERY
Historic St. Agnes Cemetery announces its summer art series featuring Plein air (outdoor) drawing, painting classes and photography. Artists of all skill levels invited!
Class size will be limited to allow one on one instruction in drawing, painting and camera technique using the cemetery’s Victorian grounds, beautiful neo-classical sculptures and architecture as subjects. Award winning artist Randi Bentley and professional photographer Joann Hoose have helped many students become better at their craft. The first in our summer series of art & photography classes that will be held:
May 6 - 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. Figure drawing
May 13 – 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. Perspective in drawing classic architecture
May 20 - 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Photography instruction: camera techniques demystified!
June 10 – 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. Watercolor lessons in landscape painting
June 24 – 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. Drawing Floral arrangements using fresh picked flowers
