VILLAGE BOARD MEETING

The next Village Board meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 18, 2011. All meetings are open to the public and are handicap accessible.

 

APPLICATIONS BEING ACCEPTED

The Village of Menands is accepting applications from village residents for two positions in our Court.  Please submit    application   and   resume   to   Village  Clerk  by April 21. 2011.

 

Acting Village Justice  

Lawyer with Criminal Law experience preferred.  Duties will involve presiding over Menands Village Court when Village Justice is not available or at his direction.

 

Assistant Court Clerk

Minimum Qualifications:  High School Diploma or GED and three (3) years clerical and/or secretarial work in a legal, public safety or governmental setting.

 

Preferred Qualifications Include:  Ability to write legibly, organization skills, computer literate, working knowledge of office and court terminology and procedures.

Due to the number of recent structure fires in the village, please be sure you have working smoke detectors in your home.

TOWN OF COLONIE LANDFILL

The next Town of Colonie 2011 household hazardous drop-off waste date is April 20th  from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.  Information and flyers are available at the Village Hall or call 783-2827.

 

YOUTH EASTER PARTY

The Youth Easter Party is going to be held on Saturday, April 16th at the Ganser Smith Park from 11-12.  There will be refreshments served along with a greeting from the Easter Bunny.  **Please dress accordingly.  Don’t forget to bring a bag or basket to collect your eggs for the Easter egg hunt.  If you have any questions please feel free to call Brianna DiBiase at 469-7726.

 

EARTH DAY SPRING CLEAN UP

The Earth Day Spring Clean Up will be conducted on Saturday April 16th between 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.  Volunteers will be asked to meet at Ganser-Smith Park at 9:30 a.m.  If you have any questions, please call Tim Lane at: 465-8807.

 

PARKSIDE PRESCHOOL

Parkside PreSchool and The Lyon Cubs at Bethany Presbyterian Church are accepting registrations. They are a licensed daycare and prekindergarten program open from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for children 3 – 5 years of age.  The program provides breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack. The Lyon Cubs provide for children ages 18 months to 3 years.  Classes are Monday thru Friday 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.  Contact Parkside Preschool at 449-2999.

 

SPOTLIGHT ON MENANDS BUSINESS–APRIL 2011

This month we feature Cryo Weld Corporation located at 564 Broadway in Menands.

 

Cryo Weld is a supplier of industrial, medical and specialty gases, welding supplies and safety equipment, as well as fire extinguisher sales and service.  The company is headquartered in Poughkeepise, N.Y. and has an office in Kingston, with twenty one full time employees.

Under the direction of company President Tom Dyal, Cryo Weld serves customers as far north as the Lake George region, west to Amsterdam, south to northern New Jersey and east to Connecticut & Massachusetts.  The company prides itself on dedication to premium service so that no customer does without the supplies they need with 24/7 emergency service.  The company has an inventory of over 20,000 items related to their product lines.

Cryo Weld provides propane services through a tank exchange program from homeowner BBQ to industrial sizes.

 

The company opened its Menands location in March, 2009.  Exactly two years later they opened their state of the art cylinder filling plant.  They employ five full time people including Tom’s son, Tommy, Plant Manager, and Chris Gardner, Sales Manager, for the Menands store.  The Menands store is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and offers Saturday hours from 9 to Noon.

MENANDS FIRE COMPANY NEWS

The next meeting of the Menands Fire Co. will be on Tuesday, May 3, 2011.  All fire company members are invited to attend.

 

LENTEN SOUP SALE

Bethany Presbyterian Church will be offering soup, the third and final soup, Corn Chowder, on April 15th during the Lenten season.  The price of soup will be $5/quart.  Homemade breads will also again be available at $3.25/loaf.  Last year, we frequently sold out within the first hour.  Consider reserving your order ahead of time.  You may order in advance by calling Judy Blair at 465-3295 or by filling out a coupon (found at the back of the sanctuary at Bethany or at the entry to Folensbee Hall) or you may just drop in. Soup will be available for pick up between 3:00 and 5:30 p.m. on above mentioned dates.

               

MENANDS SENIOR CITIZENS NEWS

On April 17, 2011, we will be going to the Cohoes Music Hall, Cohoes, N.Y. to see “CABARET”.  The bus leaves Ganser-Smith Park promptly at 2:00 p.m.

On May 17, 2011, we are going to attend “Paddy and Bridget’s Wedding”, which takes place at Gavin’s Irish Country Inn, East Durham, N.Y.  A reception  follows the ceremony at 12:00 noon.  A choice of roast beef or chicken breast will be served, followed by music and dancing.  Cost is $31.

 

MENANDS SCHOOL BOARD OF EDUCATION

The Menands School Board of Education will meet on May 9, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. in the library of the School

                       

MENANDS PUBLIC LIBRARY

Storytime will be presented on Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. for the youngest set.

The Menands Public Library’s Tuesday at 1 o’clock Spring film series will be about doing business in America as seen by Hollywood.

April 19th  -  Office Space (1999) directed by Mike Judge  Peter Gibbons (Ron Livington) hates his job and  the people he works with.  Employees are treated like dirt.  Peter decides to steal from the company a fraction of a cent at a time along with Joanna (Jennifer Aniston) his sort of girlfriend.  He ends up with $300,000!

April 26th  -  The Devil Wears Prada (2006) directed by David Frankel.  Andi Sachs (Ann Hathaway) stumbles into a job most would kill for.  The problem is the job may kill her because of her demanding boss Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep). 

 

TO THE QUALIFIED VOTERS OF THE MENANDS UNION FREE SCHOOL DISTRICT.

Registration - Wednesday, May 11, 2011 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the main lobby of the Menands School.  A Public Hearing on the proposed 2011-2012 Budget for the Menands Union Free School District and the Menands Public Library shall be held at the  Menands School on Monday, May 9, 2011 at 6:30 p.m.  The annual meeting of the qualified voters of the Menands Union Free School District will be held on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 between the hours of 12:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at the Menands School.  Absentee ballots must be received by the District Clerk not later than 5:00 p.m. on May 17, 2011.  

 

HISTORIC ST. AGNES CEMETERY

Historic St. Agnes Cemetery announces its summer art series featuring Plein air (outdoor) drawing, painting classes and photography.  Artists of all skill levels invited!

Class size will be limited to allow one on one instruction in drawing, painting and camera technique using the cemetery’s Victorian grounds, beautiful neo-classical sculptures and architecture as subjects.  Award winning artist Randi Bentley and professional photographer Joann Hoose have helped many students become better at their craft.  The first in our summer series of art & photography classes will be held:

 

May   6 -  1:30 – 3:30  p.m.  Figure drawing

 

May 13 – 1:30 – 3:30 p.m.  Perspective in drawing classic architecture

 

May 20 -  4:00 – 8:00 p.m.  Photography instruction: camera techniques demystified!

 

June 10 – 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. Watercolor lessons in landscape painting

 

June 24 – 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. Drawing Floral arrangements using fresh picked flowers

ALBANY EVENING GARDEN CLUB

The next meeting of the Garden Club will be May 3rd.  We will have a slide presentation of various member’s gardens.
