VILLAGE BOARD MEETING

The next Village Board meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 18, 2011.  All meetings are open to the public and are handicap accessible.

HOLIDAY SCHEDULES

The Village Office, Village Court and D.P.W. will be closed on Monday, January 17, 2011 for Martin Luther King, Jr.  Monday’s trash pick up will be Tuesday, January 18th and Tuesday’s pick up will be on Wednesday, January 19th.  Recycling days will remain the same. There will be NO SPECIAL  pick up on  Wednesday, January 19th.

LOCAL LAW

Local Law 82-6 – Residents are required to recover emptied garbage containers from the curbside by 7:00 p.m. on the scheduled day of collection.  Garbage containers are to be stored in a location that is generally out of sight of the adjoining property and the general public.  Violations are subject to fines.

PARKS/BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE MEETING

There will be a meeting of the parks/beautification committee at the village municipal building on Thursday, January 13th at 7:00 p.m.  Topics of discussion to include current and future projects/plans for our village parks as well as ongoing village beautification projects.  This meeting is a great opportunity to join the committee in sharing and discussing ideas to improve our village.  Tentative projects will be presented to the village board prior to budget planning meetings.  Interested or have ideas, but schedule conflicts, email me at dmacfar3@nycap.rr.com.

MENANDS FIRE COMPANY NEWS

On Sunday, February 6, 2011, the Menands Fire Company is hosting a Super Bowl Party for its members and their guests at the Firehouse at 5:30 p.m.  Food, snacks, beer and soda will be available.  Cost is $5 per person, $10 families.  A sign-up sheet is on the board in the Lounge.

MENANDS SENIOR CITIZENS

January 19, 2011 we will make our debut at the Saratoga Casino and Raceway, Saratoga, NY.  We will arrive at the casino at 10:00 a.m., try our luck at the gaming tables, enjoy a fabulous buffet lunch and return home at 3:00 p.m.  Cost $10.  Many seats left.

March 2, 2011 We will have dinner at the FARMER BOY DINER in Colonie, N.Y.  Afterward, we will go to see Walt Disney’s “THE LION KING” at Proctor’s Theater, Schenectady, N.Y.  Cost $80. Waiting list only.

On March 17, 2011, we will be going to The Beeches of Rome, N.Y. for “A Wee Bit ‘O the Irish,” 2 fun-filled acts of favorite Irish songs, funny Irish jokes and stories; and a hilarious Wake to die for, The Wake of Patrick Sean Clancy.  Cost $41.  If interested in any of our trips, please come to our informal gathering at Bethany Hall on Thursdays.  Trip and membership registration begin at 11:00 a.m.  2011 Club’s dues are due (still only $5).

ZUMBA  FITNESS

Zumba classes start January 10th, 2011 on Mondays from 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. at the Northeast Career Planning – Norton Center at 339 Broadway, Menands, N.Y. 12204 Conveniently located off I-787, behind Mancini’s Restaurant.  Cost $6 walk-in rate.  Please wear comfortable, loose workout clothes.  Cross-training sneakers are recommended.  Also bring a water bottle and towel.

INDOOR FARMERS MARKET-AT JOAN OF ARC

The Youth Group will be holding a Farmers Market the weekend of January 15th and 16th after the Saturday 4:00 p.m. mass and after Sunday Masses at 10:15 and 11:30 a.m.  You will be able to purchase FRESH fruits and vegetables at a reduced price.

ATTENTION GENEALOGISTS!

Historic St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands will host a lecture with demonstrations given by experienced genealogists on Saturday, January 29th from 2 – 3:30 p.m. in the Cemetery’s warm and comfortable Map Room.  Space is limited.  Please call Kelly Grimaldi at 463-0134 to reserve your seat.  Refreshments will be provided.  Come join us and learn how to trace your family tree!

2011 FATHER-DAUGHTER VALENTINE’S DANCE

The 14th  Annual Father-Daughter Valentine’s Dance will be held on Saturday, February 5, 2011 from 6 – 9 p.m. at Bethany Presbyterian Church.  This is an opportunity for fathers and ‘father figures’ to have a special and memorable evening of fun and dancing with their daughters.  Professional DJ Brian Michaels will return again to provide the music.  Advance reservations are  $20 (per father), admission at the door is $25.  To register, please send a check for $20 by January 31st payable to Steve Brickman at 21 Brookside Avenue, Menands, NY 12204 along with your name and that of your daughter(s) and your contact info (address, phone, email).  Free father-daughter portraits will be provided.  Wrist corsages can be obtained at special pricing ($12) from JH Kenny Florists on Broadway in Watervliet (273-0972).  Please call ahead of time to reserve a corsage.  We’re asking each family to bring a snack or dessert.  Please call Valecia Parker (229-4286) about food or to help in the kitchen at the dance.  If you can help decorate the (Friday) night before, please call Steve at 463-2606.

MENANDS ST. PATRICK’S CLUB

The next meeting of the club will be held on Sunday, January 9, 2011 at 12 noon.  New members are always welcome.

Join the Menands St. Patrick’s Club for an all you can eat Sweetheart Breakfast, Sunday, February 13th from 8 a.m. to 12 noon at the Menands Firehouse.  Eggs, pancakes, bacon, sausage, corned beef hash, home fries, Irish Soda Bread, Danish, pastries, doughnuts, coffee, tea and juices are being offered.

MENANDS SCHOOL BOARD OF EDUCATION

The Menands School Board of Education will meet on  January 10, 2011 at 6:30 p.m.  in  the library of the School. 

INCLEMENT WEATHER & SCHOOL CLOSINGS

When there is inclement weather, residents should tune to WGY, WROW or WTRY radio as well as TV channels 6, 10 or 13 for school closings or late openings.  If the Menands School is opening later due to weather, all bus runs will be delayed in Menands.  For example, if the Menands School is opening one hour late, then all buses transporting students outside the district will also be running one hour later.  If the Menands School is closed due to weather, transportation to high schools and private schools will be at the discretion of the Superintendent.  Also, when school is canceled during the day, after-school and night activities at the school are also canceled.

If parents have changed home and/or work phone numbers or emergency contacts, please contact Menands School at 465-4561 to update contact information.
