SPOTLIGHT ON MENANDS BUSINESS-March 2008
Our feature business for this month is the Mohawk and Hudson River Humane Society.
The Society has been located at 3 Oakwood Avenue in Menands since 1913. Originally founded in 1887 as a children’s and animal’s shelter, the MHRHS provides care for over 7,000 animals each year. It serves not only common household pets like cats, dogs, rabbits and hamsters, but also snakes, birds, iguanas, fish, horses, livestock and even llamas.
Under the direction of Executive Director Brad Shear, the Society employs 30 people and relies on over 300 volunteers to carry out its mission of serving animals. A fifteen member Board of Directors helps set policy and provides overall guidance to the Society.
The MHRHS is the oldest and largest animal shelter in the Capital District and helps place over 3,300 animals in homes each year through its pet adoptive services. In addition, the Society is involved in teaching school children about the various issues affecting animals and their owners through its Humane Education Program.
The Society has contracts with 19 Capital District communities to provide animal sheltering and related services. In addition, the Society has trained animal cruelty investigators on staff to follow up on reported instances of animal cruelty or neglect.
A recent program established by the MHRHS is an affiliation with Unity House in Troy wherein victims of domestic violence can house their pets at the animal shelter while they are in Unity House’s domestic violence shelter.
The Society does not receive any government funding but relies on donations from the public to conduct its programs. As a way to supplement this, many fund raising events are held throughout the year. Upcoming events include a “Best in (Drag) Show” on March 8 at the Irish Mist in Troy and the inaugural gals, “Around the World for 80 Strays” which will be held on April 4 at Wolferts Roost Country Club.
For more information on the events or more details on the MHRHS programs, please call 434-8128, ext. 212 or 204 or visit their web site at www.MohawkHumaneSociety.org.
