VILLAGE BOARD MEETING
The Village Board meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 due to the President’s Day placeHoliday on February 18th .  All meetings are open to the public and are handicap accessible.
        
ZONING BOARD OF APPEALS
A public hearing will be held on Thursday, February 28, 2008, at 7:00 P.M. in the Village MunicipalBuilding for the purpose of considering the following application for a variance:
        Susan Kessler-Schwartz and Joseph Swartz, 5 Dennin Drive, are requesting a variance to wave a 10 foot setback on an existing accessory structure.  
Such   public   hearings  are  open  to  the  public  and  are
accessible to the handicapped.  All are encouraged to attend or to present comments in writing.

HOLIDAY SCHEDULES
The Village Office, Village Court and D.P.W. will be closed on Monday, February 18, 2008 for Presidents’ Day.  Monday’s trash pick up will be Tuesday, February 19th and Tuesday’s pick up will be on Wednesday, February 20th.  Recycling days will remain the same.  There will be NO SPECIAL PICK UP ON WEDNESDAY, February 20th.

RECYCLING REMINDER
Newspapers should be separated from the other items by either their own bin or in a PAPER BAG.

MENANDS FIRE CO. #1, INC. NEWS
At the January meeting, the Menands Fire Company welcomed its newest member, Bradley James Treacy, son of George and Patricia Treacy of Tillinghast Avenue.
Also, Sean Connors, son of Gene and Maureen Connors of Highland Street, became an active firefighter on January 15, 2008 after serving in the Junior Firefighter program for two years.  
We would like to thank the residents and businesses in Menands for their generous support of the Menands Fire Company during our Fund Drive in 2007.  Your contributions will enable the Fire Company to continue our volunteer service to all our neighbors in theVillage of Menands.  Again, thank you for your support.

MENANDS ST. PATRICK’S CLUB
Join the Menands St. Patrick’s Club for an all you can eat Sweetheart Breakfast!  February 10th from 8 a.m. to 12 noon at the Menands Firehouse.  Eggs, pancakes, bacon, sausage, corned beef hash, home fries, Irish soda bread, Danish, pastries, doughnuts, coffee, tea and  juices are being offered. Adults $6, children under 5 free, children 12 and under $3. The next 3 meetings of the club will be held on Sundays,  February 10th , February 24th and March 2nd at 12 noon.  Because of the Breakfast, the meeting on February 10th will be at 1 p.m.  We will also pick Miss Colleen and take pictures at this meeting.  New members are always welcome.  

MISS COLLEEN CONTEST
Any Village girl, 9th grade or older, may enter with their parent’s permission.  Drawing will be held at the meeting on February 10th.  Miss Colleen and her court will represent Menands in the Albany Parade on March 15th and host the dinner dance held at the firehouse that evening.  Please fill out the entry form below and mail (or drop it off to): Menands St. Patrick’s Club, 250 Broadway, Menands, NY 2204.  Entries must be received by February 9th.

POM POM GIRLS
Any Menands girls (grade 5 and up) who wish to participate as Pom Pom girls in the Albany St. Patrick’s Parade on March 15, are asked to sign up at Menands School or call Heidi Quackenbush at 783-7205.  If there are grade 4 girls interested, a parent or guardian must accompany them in the parade.

BEAUTIFICATION AND PARKS COMMITTEES
The Beautification and Parks Committees will be holding a joint meeting on Wednesday, February 13th  at 6:30 p.m. at the Village Hall to discuss the merging of these committees as we continue with our endeavors of improving the aesthetics of our village.  We hope you will join us as we are always looking for new ideas, new members and new volunteers.  The Committees would like to expand our efforts this year and to focus on areas of the village beyond the Broadway Corridor and Ganser-Smith Park.  We would like to encourage anyone interested with ideas on making your neighborhood more beautiful, or who might want to hear what other people might suggest, please plan on attending our next meeting…refreshments will be served.  If you can’t attend, but would like to offer some ideas, please feel free to email me at: LynTeriorsDec@aol.com.

MENANDS SENIOR CITIZENS
Dues are now due - $5.00.  Remember you have to pay the dues before you can sign up for any of our trips.   
REMINDER – if Menands School is closed because of inclement weather, the senior meeting will be cancelled.
Once again, Josephine, has started up the exercise program.  It is every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. except the third Thursday of the month and this is when bingo is held.       
On March 18th we will be going to the Turning Stone Casino.  The bus will leave the Ganser-Smith Park at 8:00 a.m. and return about 7:00 p.m.  The cost is $5.  Call Ken or Flora at 434-0916 for further information or to make a reservation.

HELP WANTED
Menands School District is currently hiring substitute custodians and food service workers.  Substitute custodians work on an as-needed basis in the late afternoons and evenings.  Substitute food service workers work on an as-needed basis throughout the morning and early afternoon.  Substitute custodians are paid $9.24 per hour, and substitute food service workers are paid $8.24 per hour. If you are interested in working as a part-time, substitute custodian or food service worker at Menands School, please call Supt. Kathy Meany at 465-4561.

2008 FATHER-DAUGHTER
VALENTINE’S DANCE
The 11th Annual Father-Daughter Valentine’s Dance will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2008 from 6 – 9 p.m. at Bethany Presbyterian Church (at the corner of  N. Lyons and Menands Road).  This is an opportunity for fathers and ‘father figures’ to have a special and memorable evening of fun and dancing with their daughters.  Professional DJ Brian Michaels will return this year to provide the music. Admission at the door is $20.  Free father-daughter portraits will be provided.  Wrist corsages can be obtained at special pricing ($12) from JH Kenny Florists on Broadway in Watervliet (273-0972).  We’re again asking for every family to bring a snack or dessert.  Elizabeth LaPoint will coordinate snacks.  If you’d like to volunteer to decorate the evening before, please call Steve at 463-2606.  Please call Elizabeth (472-0127) if you’d like to help in the kitchen.

LENTEN SOUPSALE
Bethany Presbyterian Church will once again be offering soups for sale during the Lenten season.  Our first offering will be Hearty Vegetable on Friday, February 15th.  The price of soup will be $3.75/quart.  Homemade breads will also again be available at $2.25/loaf.  Soup will be available for pick up between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. on February 15th.  Last year, we frequently sold out within the first hour.  Consider reserving your order.  You may order in advance by calling Jean Lamere at 462-9827 or by filling out a coupon (found at the back of the sanctuary at Bethany or at the entry to Folensbee Hall), or you may just drop in between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. on February 15th .
