VILLAGE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS & SNOW REMOVAL
To provide you with the best service possible, the Department of Public Works (DPW) would like to remind everyone that your cooperation is needed during the winter months for proper plowing, salting and snow removal.  If you have a driveway or an off street parking space, please use it during the winter months and especially during a snow or ice storm as vehicles parked on the street hinder plowing operations.   Additionally, anything that you might have in the Village’s right-of-way, such as a basketball hoop, should be moved and stored for the winter.  The Village will not be responsible for damage to any items left in the Village’s right-of-way.  Also, if your vehicle is parked in the street and it prevents the snowplow from passing, the vehicle WILL be towed at the owner’s expense.

SPOTLIGHT ON MENANDS BUSINESS-DEC. 2007
For our final column of the “SPOTLIGHT” for 2007, we have focused in on one of our most beautiful and historic places, St. Agnes Cemetery.  The Cemetery was established in 1867 as a project of a number of Catholic laymen of the Albany area under the direction of then-Bishop Conroy.  The Cemetery is considered to be sacred ground under the guidelines of the Roman Catholic Church and was rededicated as such by Bishop Howard Hubbard in September 2007.
The 108 acre Cemetery is under the direction of
Rick Touchette and is part of the Albany Diocesan Cemeteries.  In addition to ground burial, the Cemetery has two mausoleums that were added in 1985 and 2000, respectively.
The Cemetery is the final resting place of several famous people including New York’s first Catholic Governor, Martin Glynn, former Albany Mayors Michael Nolan and Thomas Whelan, former Congressman Leo O”Brien, and four other Members of Congress.  In addition, former Menands Police Chief Michael McCauley is also buried in St. Agnes.  Historical figures include World War 1 hero, Parker Dunn and 263 Civil War Veterans.  Among the Civil War participants, is Lt. Patrick White who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic action during the Battle of Vicksburg.  Another interesting story is that of Jeramiah Stokes who was an Irish immigrant who first lived in Savannah, country-regionGeorgia, joined the Confederacy at the outbreak of the Civil War and was soon captured by Union forces.  He was sent to a prison camp in Illinois and was offered his freedom in exchange for joining the Union Army.  The offer was made by Lt. Henry Rathbone who would later become famous as the Major Rathbone who was with President Lincoln when he was assassinated at Ford’s Theater in Washington.  As a Union soldier, Stokes went on to fight Indians in the West, returned to Albany and died in 1915.  He thus has the distinction of having fought for both the North and the South during the Civil War.
The Cemetery has a very active Visitor’s Program wherein the public is invited and encouraged to take organized tours of the facility during the months of June through August.  The tours last about an hour and a half and provide a unique opportunity to learn more about this wonderful site in Menands.  Events planned for 2008 include a photo contest as well as trolley tours in May and September.  The Cemetery also encourages local schools to participate in its cultural activities.  The Cemetery staff can be reached at 463-0134 or on the web at www.rcdacemeteries.org.  For information on group activities or specific events, please contact Molly Nicol, Director of Development.
Best wishes to all during this Wonderful Time of the Year!

INCLEMENT WEATHER AND SCHOOL CLOSINGS
When there is inclement weather, residents should tune to WGY, WROW or WTRY radio as well as TV channels 6, 10 and 13 for school closings or late openings.  If the Menands School is opening later due to weather, all bus runs will be delayed in Menands.  For example, if the Menands School is opening one hour late, then all buses transporting students outside the district will also be running one hour later.  If the Menands School is closed due to weather, transportation to high schools and private schools will be at the discretion of the Superintendent of Schools.  Also, when school is canceled during the day, after school and night activities at the school are also canceled.  If parents have changed home/work phone numbers or emergency contacts, please contact the Menands School at 465-4561.
