SPOTLIGHT ON MENANDS BUSINESS-NOV. 2007
Our feature business this month is the Capital District Child Care Coordinating Council.
The Council, located at 91 Broadway in the Village, is a resource and referral agency dedicated to promoting quality, accessible child care for all of the Capital District Region’s diverse communities. The Council assumes a leadership role in supporting children, parents, child care professionals, and employers through referral counseling, training, and advocacy.
The Child Care Council was founded by a group of concerned child care directors who shared common problems and concerns. In 1989, the Council received start-up funding from the New York State Office of Children and Family Services to provide services to agencies in Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga and Schenectady Counties.
Under the direction of Patricia Skinner, Executive Director, the Council currently employs a staff of 45 persons and has a training site in Menands as well as in downtown Schenectady. The Menands Office is currently the only not for profit organization in a New York State designated Empire Zone.
The Council provides education and training for early childhood professionals and has established an Infant/Toddler Regional Technical Assistance Center. Technical assistance and training is also available to child care providers in the area.
On July 12 2007, the Council was awarded Best Practice Certification as a Child Care Resource and Referral Agency. The Council was among the first agencies of its kind in New York State to receive such recognition.
One of the services that the Council offers for parents seeking child care information is a referral system to local providers so that parents may make informed choices when selecting child care options for their youngsters. This service has proven most effective and helpful for parents as well as providers.
The Capital District Child Care Council can be reached at 426-7181 or on the web at www.cdcccc.org.

INCLEMENT WEATHER AND SCHOOL CLOSINGS
When there is inclement weather, residents should tune to WGY, WROW or WTRY radio as well as TV channels 6, 10 and 13 for school closings or late openings. If the Menands School is opening later due to weather, all bus runs will be delayed in Menands. For example, if the Menands School is opening one hour late, then all buses transporting students outside the district will also be running one hour later. If the Menands School is closed due to weather, transportation to high schools and private schools will be at the discretion of the Superintendent of Schools. Also, when school is canceled during the day, after school and night activities at the school are also canceled.
