VILLAGE BOARD MEETING
The Village Board meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, November 5, 2007. All meetings are open to the public and are handicap accessible.
LEAF MACHINE
The Village’s Leaf Machine will be in operation until Friday, November 30, 2007 – weather permitting. Loose leaves that are raked to the side of the road will be picked up by the Leaf Machine. Mulched leaves and grass should be bagged. Branches, limbs, etc. should be cut in 3 ft. lengths. We do NOT accept any dirt in the biodegradable bags. Biodegradable bags are available 2/$1.00 at the Village Office, Monday – Friday 8 – 4 p.m.
NEW RECYCLING GUIDELINES
Effective immediately, glass, plastic and cans do not have to be separated, they can be mixed. Newspapers should be separated from the other items by either their own bin or in a PAPER BAG. TRASH REMINDER – CLEAR BAGS SHOULD BE USED FOR DISPOSAL OF YOUR TRASH.
WATER METER READING
Thursday, November 1, 2007 the Department of Public Works has begun reading water meters in the Village.
STORM DRAINS
The DPW asks that you help keep the storm water catch basins near your home free of leaves and debris during the year to prevent back-ups.
NOVEMBER TRASH SCHEDULE
Election Day Tuesday, November 6th, there will be a Regular Trash Collection Day.
Due to the observance of Veteran’s Day, Monday November 12th , regular trash pick up will be changed as follows: Monday’s pick up will be Tuesday and Tuesday’s will be Wednesday. Recycling pick up will be the regular schedule. There will be NO SPECIAL PICK UP Wednesday, November 14th .
There will be only three (3) Special Trash Pick Up Days in November, as follows: November 7th , 21st and 28th . Please plan accordingly.

The Village Office will be closed in observance of the following Holidays:
Tuesday, November 6th – Election Day
Monday, November 12th – Veteran’s Day
Thursday, November 22nd – Thanksgiving Day
ELECTION DAY BAKE SALE
The Menands Fire Company Auxiliary will hold their Annual Election Day Bake Sale at the Menands Firehouse on Election Day, Tuesday November 6, 2007 from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
All members are asked to bring their baked goods in early. All donations will be greatly accepted.
SPECIAL CEREMONY
On Sunday, November 11, St. Agnes Cemetery in Menands will conduct a special ceremony to honor all veterans and unveil and bless the completely renovated headstone of Civil War veteran Pvt. Thomas D. Smullen. The event will begin at 1:30 p.m. with the LaSalle Institute Honor Guard and bugler. Assemblyman John McEneny and Colonel Kevin R. Moore, Commander of the Watervliet Arsenal, will speak and honor soldiers past and present. The Sons of the Union Veterans of The Civil War will fire a musket salute. All are welcome to attend.
WOUNDED WARRIORS PROJECT
On Thursday, November 15th (note date change), the North Albany American Legion Post 1610 will be hosting the 2nd Annual Wounded Warriors Project. Please contact addressStreetTim Lane at 429-8550 for further information.
CHRISTMAS BAZAAR
For that unique hand-crafted gift, luscious baked items, jams, jellies, pickles, salads or yummy soup, come to Bethany Presbyterian Church’s Christmas Bazaar on Saturday, November 17th from 9-3 p.m. at the corner of Menand Road and North Lyons Avenue. We’ll have hand-made knits, jewelry, Christmas items, gifts for dogs and second-hand items at our white elephant sale. Start your morning with a cup of coffee and goodie served from 9:00 - 11 a.m. followed by lunch served until 1 p.m. Hope to see you there.
SPECIAL TOUR OF ALBANY RURAL CEMETERY
A special tour, Albany’s Political Graveyard, focuses on the once-powerful players in New York State government who have influenced history and are buried in Albany Rural Cemetery. This tour is being offered at 10 a.m. on November 17th.
The tour will meet at the Chapel in Albany Rural (enter from Broadway in Menands). Refreshments will be served prior to the tour. Cost is $25 per person. Reservations are required by calling 518-462-3825.

MENANDS SENIOR CITIZENS
On Tuesday, November 27, we will celebrate a Victorian Christmas in the Berkshires at the Williams Inn with a fabulous buffet and entertainment, too. Cost is $38. Contact Gert at 462-1860 or Pat at 436-8772. Payment deadline is November 15.
The annual Christmas Party for Menands Seniors and guests will be held on Sunday, December 2, 2007 at the Menands Firehouse. Cocktails at 4:00 p.m., hors d’oeuvres at 4:30 p.m. and dinner at 6:00 p.m. Menu choices are Prime Rib or Smokehouse Chicken. Cost is $20.00 per person. There will also be a $5. The Menands Junior Baseball and Softball League would like to thank all of the village residents who responded so generously to our recent fundraising appeal. CONGRATULATIONS!
Margaret Rose Ray of Menands, a 2004 graduate of Shaker High School, has been inducted into Phi Beta Kappa at Amherst college. Meg, a chemistry major, was also the recipient of a one year Beckman Foundation fellowship to support her senior thesis research at Amherst. She has also run varsity cross country all four years and will be traveling with the Amherst team to Minnesota this fall where the team is favored to win the NCAA Division 3 national championship. After graduation, she hopes to take a year off doing volunteer work in Latin America, prior to entering medical school in the fall of 2008. Margaret is the daughter of Dr. David Ray and Dr. Mimi Bruce of Menands.
