SPOTLIGHT ON MENANDS BUSINESS-October 2007
October marks the first anniversary of our monthly feature, “Spotlight on Menands Business”.  During the past year, we have featured articles on a sampling of the over 250 businesses that are located in the Village. As we prepare to continue this series into 2008, this month’s article will focus on the role of Village Government to support the extensive variety of businesses that provide goods and services to a commercial base that ranges from Menands residents to area, regional, Statewide, national and international customers.
Our unique location and access to superhighways provides an economic advantage to our businesses and also helps in the Village’s efforts to attract new enterprises that may be considering locating their facilities in the Village.  The Village Board has made an ongoing effort to encourage a business-friendly environment by helping interested parties to understand the various requirements of the Village Code as they relate to business location and operation. In addition, the Village Board has worked with potential applicants to access State and local programs that are designed to help companies do business in Menands.  These include possible tax abatements and qualification for the Empire Zone Program.  The Village staff can also provide assistance with any State mandates that might impact a business owner seeking to locate in Menands
The Board  emphasizes communication and outreach to our business community through the promotion of an “open door” policy of welcoming new inquiries about business opportunities in Menands.  One example of this  is the semi-annual “Menands Business Breakfast” program wherein business owners and representatives with a presence of interest in the community are invited to spend part of a morning with the Mayor, Trustees, and key staff members of  the Village in order to learn more about Village Government.  Our next Business Breakfast will be held on October 24 beginning at 7 A.M.  All of our businesses have received an invitation and anyone else who is interested is welcome to attend.  Simply call the Village Office at 434-2922 or e-mail us at villageofmenands@hotmail.com to make your reservation.
