SPOTLIGHT ON MENANDS BUSINESS
Our feature business this month is the Capital District Farmers Market.
The Capital District Farmers Market, officially known as the Capital District Cooperative, Inc., was created in 1933 by 530 Capital District Growers. An organization committee representing the Growers developed a comprehensive plan for a new Regional Market to serve the needs of Eastern New York. The plan provided for the creation of a wholesale food-handling facility in Menands. The site, 381 Broadway, was chosen for its easy access to the infrastructure of the 1930s and provided a place where locally and non-locally grown produce could be made available to stores, shops, restaurants and food processors at a competitive price.
The Market is overseen by a 15 member Board of Directors which is headed up by a local farmer, John D. DeForge. The Market also employs a General Manager, Fred Cole, who is responsible for the administration of the Market.
Over the years, the Market has continued to provide sellers and buyers the same benefit that it did when it was first established. The Market continued substantially unchanged until recently when a physical plant preservation and enhancement project was begun. The plan will provide an opportunity for new vendors, the general public, artists, and entertainers to come to the facility and take advantage of the offerings.
To help with this effort, the Village of Menands co-sponsored a Market Feasibility Study through a New York State grant to identify strategies that will promote the activities of the Market and broaden public participation at the site.
One of the new features is the Saturday Farmers Market Program where the public may come and buy fresh produce between 8 AM and 1 PM. In addition, there are several special events planned for the Fall including a Harvest Festival on September 22nd which will feature pumpkins, mums, and seasonal vegetables. In addition, there will be live music and food vendors. The Festival will run from 8 AM to 3 PM.
The Saint Joan of Arc Parish Bazaar will be held from October 12 – 14 and will feature rides, games and food.
The Capital District Farmers Market is truly a wonderful resource for the Village as well as the entire Capital District. Stop by some Saturday morning and see for yourself!
