VILLAGE BOARD MEETING
The Village Board meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 2, 2007.  All meetings are open to the public and are handicapped accessible.

VILLAGE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS & SNOW REMOVAL.
To provide you with the best service possible, the Department of Public Works (DPW) would like to remind everyone that your cooperation is needed during the winter months for proper plowing, salting and snow removal.  If you have a driveway or an off street parking space, please use it during the winter months and especially during a snow or ice storm as vehicles parked on the street hinder plowing operations.  Additionally, anything that you might have in the Village’s right-of-way, such as a basketball hoop should be moved and stored for the winter.  The Village will not be responsible for damage to any items left in the Village’s right-of-way.  Also if your vehicle is parked in the street and it prevents the snowplow from passing, the vehicle WILL be towed at the owner’s expense.

ATTENTION RESIDENTS
The DPW asks that you help keep the storm water catch basins near your home free of leaves and debris during the year to prevent back-ups.

TRASH/RECYCLING/COMPOST PROGRAMS
Trash and Recyclables should be placed curbside no earlier than 6 p.m. the evening before your scheduled pick up.  Trash barrels should NOT exceed 40 lbs. Leaves and grass clippings must be bagged or placed directly in a barrel (not to exceed 40 lbs.).

        SPOTLIGHT ON MENANDS BUSINESS
With over 150 businesses in the Village, from international companies to sole proprietorships, Menands has a business community to be proud of and we want to provide due recognition for our business neighbors.  Our feature business for December is the Corner Well Restaurant.

The Corner Well is located at 698 North Pearl Street, right at the border of Menands and North Albany.  The restaurant was opened in April, 2006 by partners Hadi, Havzi and Sebahattin Ipek along with Terri Haley.  Terri serves as General Manager as well.  About twelve people are currently employed at the Corner Well.  Menands residents are familiar with the establishment which was formerly known as Charlie Weaver’s and Clancy’s Well.

The new owners have undertaken a massive rehabilitation and upgrade of the premises in effort to make the restaurant attractive to families and individuals in and around the community.  The Ipek family was able to bring their construction expertise to bear on the improvements to the property and the result has been a pleasant and attractive setting for customers to enjoy.
The Corner Well is open from Monday through Saturday for lunch and dinner and offers an array of popular entrees as well as traditional pub fare items including pizza.  The entire menu is available for take out with free delivery included.  In addition, there is a small banquet room that is available for private parties and the restaurant also does outside catering.

The Menands Rotary meets at the Corner Well and the Menands Book Club will begin regular meetings this month.

The Corner Well has a children’s menu available and features entertainment about once a month on Saturday Night.

The Corner Well is open Monday to Wednesday from 11:30 to 9 PM and Thursday to Saturday from 11:30 to 10 PM.  The phone number is 427-9355.

NEW NOVEL ABOUT MENANDS’ RESIDENT’ S WAR EXPERIENCES
The novel DIVIDED LOYALITES by Richard E. Witten is based on the World War II experiences of the late Harry R. Hayes.  Mr. Hayes, a long time resident of Menands, helped liberate a Nazi labor camp during the war.  The Menands Public Library has copies you can borrow of this very griping novel.

INCLEMENT WEATHER AND SCHOOL CLOSINGS
When there is inclement weather, residents should tune to WGY, WROW or WTRY radio as well as TV channels 6, 10 and 13 for school closings or late openings.  When school is canceled during the day, after school and night activities at the school are also canceled.  If  you have changed home/work phone numbers or emergency contacts, please contact the Menands School (465-4561).  If the Menands School is closed due to weather, transportation to high schools and private schools will be at the discretion of the Menands UFSD Superintendent of Schools.  If the Menands School is opening late due to the weather, all bus runs will be delayed in Menands.  For example, if the Menands School is opening one hour late, then all buses transporting students outside the district will also be running one hour late.

2007 FATHER-DAUGHTER VALENTINE’S DANCE
Back by popular demand, the 10th Annual Father-Daughter Valentine’s Dance will be held on Saturday, February 3, 2007 from 6 – 9 p.m. at Bethany Presbyterian Church.  This is an opportunity for fathers and ‘father figures’ to have a special and memorable evening of fun and dancing with their daughters.  Professional DJ and Magic 100.9 FM radio PERSONALITY, Brian Michaels, will provide the music.  Preparations are underway and volunteers are needed (errands, set-up, publicity, replenish refreshments, etc.).  If you are interested in helping, please contact Steve or Lisa Brickman at 463-2606.
