VILLAGE BOARD MEETING
The Village Board meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, October 16, 2006.  All meetings are open to the public and handicapped accessible.

ZONING BOARD OF APPEALS
A public hearing will be held on Thursday, October 12, 2006 at 7:00 P.M. in the Village Municipal Building for the purpose of considering the following application for a variance: Dr. & Mrs. Maston is requesting a variance to construct a garage on their property at 216 Van Rensselaer Blvd.
Such public hearings are open to the public and are accessible to the handicapped.  All are encouraged to attend or to present comments in writing.   

NOTICE OF PUBLIC WORKSHOP
There will be a public workshop on Tuesday, October 10 at 7 P.M. in the Village Hall to review the preliminary recommendations regarding a study of Community Design Standards, Village Gateways and an extension of the existing Bikeway/Walkway trail from Schuyler Flats Park (Town of Colonie) into the Village. The Village of Menands has received a Quality Communities Grant from the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historical Preservation to undertake this study.  The workshop will include presentations by Village consultants ELAN planning and Design (CDS/Village Gateways) as well as Boswell Engineering (Bikeway/Walkway Trail).  Public discussion is invited and encouraged, as it is the intention of the Village Board to get as much public input as possible so that we have a final product that will be exemplary for the Village.
       
HOLIDAY SCHEDULE CHANGES
Due to the observance of Columbus Day, the Village Office will be closed on Monday, October 9th and there will be no trash pick up.  Monday’s trash pick up will be Tuesday, October 10th and Tuesday’s pick up will be Wednesday, October 11th.  THERE WILL BE NO SPECIAL PICK UP ON WEDNESDAY.

ATTENTION RESIDENTS
Chief O’Brien advises that due to a series of calls received recently by Menands Police involving sick and diseased animals, both foxes and raccoons, residents are reminded not to approach animals such as these, especially if they are not behaving normally and are not attempting to avoid human contact.  Any such incidents should be reported to the Police Department for follow up action in conjunction with Animal Control.

MENANDS FIRE CO. #1
Menands Fire Department & Colonie EMS are working together  in  conjunction  with  the  American Friends   CPR
Anytime Association in offering the Family Program.  The program will be offered at the Menands Fire Hall 7 P.M. on November 8th.  The Family & Friends CPR Program is $30.00 and includes:  Inflatable CPR Manikin, a DVD, American Heart Association Booklets and takes 22 minutes to complete in the privacy of your home.  Colonie Paramedics and Members of the Menands Fire Department will be offering an introductory course that evening.  The life you save may be a Friend or a Family member.
An 8 HP TORO Snow Thrower, which can be seen at Menands True Value Hardware, is being raffled off.  Tickets are $5.00 each or 4 tickets for $15.00.  Tickets are available at Menands True Value or thru any Menands Firefighter.  The drawing will be at the annual Halloween Party at Ganser-Smith Park.  Thank you for your support!

. MENANDS SENIOR CITIZENS
The Menands Seniors will be going to Blackhead Mountain Resort in Round Top, N.Y. on Wednesday, November 8th.  The price is $36.00. For reservations, please call Susan at 472-9022 or Arnold at 869-3020.  Reservation, payment and meal choice deadline is October 25th.   On October 26th, Peter Lattanzio, Chief Fire Inspector/Investigator of the Town of Colonie will be our guest speaker at 10:45 A.M.

BETHANY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
On Friday, October 20th, from 5-7 P.M., Bethany Presbyterian Church, 21 North Lyons Ave., Menands, is holding a Spaghetti Dinner featuring Lou Collen’s special homemade spaghetti sauce.  Donations will be accepted.  Proceeds will benefit, Camp Hebron building fund.  Camp Hebron is a youth camp and conference center located in rural Washington County run by Albany Presbytery.  Over the years, many village youth have attended Camp Hebron through Bethany.  For information call 463-8217.

2006 MENANDS PUBLIC LIBRARY
Menands Library – Fall Film Series Presents:
MISS BETTE DAVIS
                Every Tuesday this fall at 1:00 p.m., the library will show a Film starring Miss Davis.  Movies are:

                                October 17th – The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex           
                Fall into storytime:  Our drop in story hour for children is Mondays at 10 a.m.  Stop by for stories, songs and crafts.                 For more information call the library at 463-4035.    

HELP! COMMUNITY FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS
We are very excited by the response we have received to the services we are offering.  We appreciate the efforts of the persons who are volunteering their assistance to transport and visit friends and neighbors.  The requests are becoming so numerous that we desperately need more help so we don’t wear out the folks who are currently volunteering.  If you are able and willing to assist, please contact one of the persons listed below:

MENANDS YOUTH BASKETBALL
Registration for the Menands Youth Basketball Program will be held on Thursday, October 19th and Tuesday, October 24th from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Menands School – gym entrance.  Village of Menands Boys and Girls in Grades 3 thru 8 are invited to participate.  Coaches and  assistants are needed – training is available.  If interested, please call program director, Ed Malone at 462-9433.


ST. JOAN OF ARC
St. Joan of Arc will offer Faith Formation classes every Sunday beginning October 15th, 2006.  For registration forms and further information, please call Kirsten Suberg at St. Joan of Arc @ 463-0378.

MENANDS YOUTH ORGANIZATION
The Menands Youth Organization is hosting a Halloween Party on Tuesday, October 31st from 6-8 P.M.  There will be a parade starting from the firehouse and finishing at the park where there will be refreshments, horse and carriage rides and other goodies.  Be there 5:45 sharp for all the fun to begin!  Hope to see you there…..

MUMS
The Menands School PTA would like to thank everyone who participated in the MUM Sale.  It was a great success and we sold over 560 mums.  Thanks to all our volunteers who assisted with unloading the truck and helping customers to their cars.  We would have not been successful without everyone lending a hand.  Thanks Again!

APPLICATIONS BEING ACCEPTED
Applications are being accepted for a Laborer in the D.P.W.
C.D.L. is required.  Applications can be picked up at the Village Office between 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

SAVE THIS DATE!
Monday, October 23, 2006.  The Menands School is beginning their search for a new Superintendent and would appreciate the Communities involvement.  There will be several opportunities during the day and evening on 10-23 for the community to get involved.  Watch the activities,  the     school     web-site     www.menandsschool.nycap.rr.com,
mailings  and  also  flyers  sent  home  with  the children for more information.  The Board of Education thanks you in advance for your help.

PIANO ACCOMPANIST NEEDED
Menands School is looking for a piano accompanist to work with our K-8 students during the week of November 27th.
We are once again sponsoring the Missoula Children’s Theatre Residency Week and the students will be performing Robin Hood.  The hours of rehearsal when the accompanist would be needed are Wednesday 11/29 thru Friday 12/1 from 3:15 p.m. until 7:45 p.m., with dress rehearsal and performance on Saturday 12/2 from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.  The Missoula Children’s Theatre is a wonderful program we have hosted for several years; a program designed to develop lifeskills in our children through participation in the performing arts.  For further information, please call Dianne MacFarland at 253-4925.
