HOLIDAY SCHEDULE
Due to the observance of Columbus Day, there will be no trash pick up on Monday October 10th .  Monday’s trash pick up will be Tuesday, October 11th and Tuesday’s pick up will be Wednesday, October 12th.  There will be NO special pick up on Wednesday, October 12th .

The Village Office will be closed in observance of the following Holidays:
Monday,   October 10th         –  Columbus Day
Tuesday,  November 8th       –   Election Day
Friday,     November 11th   –   Veteran’s Day
Thursday,November 24th   –  Thanksgiving Day

Tuesday, November 8th , all other Village services will be normal, trash will be picked up on that day.  

NOVEMBER TRASH SCHEDULE
Due to the observance of Veteran’s Day on Friday,       November 11th and Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 24th , there will be only three (3)  Special Trash Pick Up Days in November:  November  2nd, 16th and 30th   Please plan accordingly.

ZONING BOARD OF APPEALS
A Public hearing will be held on Thursday, October 20, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. in the Village Municipal Building for the purpose of considering the following application for a variance: Robert Ingersoll, 17 Highland Street, is requesting a variance to construct a deck on the property at 17 Highland Street.
Such public hearings are open to the public and are accessible to the handicapped.  All are encouraged to attend or to present comments in writing.

LEAF VACUUM
The Village DPW will begin vacuuming leaves during the week of October 24th and continue until December 3rd weather permitting.  LEAVES ONLY must be raked to the side of the road for pick up.  Biodegradable Bags for leaves and grass clippings will continue to be collected.

YOUTH DANCE
A Youth Committee dance for Village youth is scheduled for Friday, October 7th at the Menands Firehouse. K-5 from 6 - 7:30 p.m. $3.00; 6th grade & up from 7:30 p.m. –
11 p.m. $6.00.  Price includes pizza, drink and music.  CHAPERONES welcome and encouraged.  Please be aware of parking signs posted around the firehouse when dropping off and picking up child.  The next Youth Dance will be Friday, December 2nd

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK OCT. 9TH – 12TH
OPEN HOUSE OCT. 12TH
7:00 a.m.,October12th - Fire Department Trucks pick up contest winners for rides to school on the Fire Trucks

9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., October 12th – Parkside Pre School visit the Menands Fire House for Fire Prevention Training,  cookies and milk and
                                                fun on the Truck Floor.

1:30 p.m., October 12th – Fire Drill and inspection at the Menands Union Free School with evolution’s and fire prevention training immediately                          following the fire drill.

6:30 p.m., October 12th Menands Fire Prevention Bureau and Menands Fire Department OPEN HOUSE – Fire Prevention Classes Menands                                       Village Hall; and Truck Floor.

HUMANE SOCIETY EVENTS
Sunday, October 9th Stride for Strays @ Ganser-Smith Park.  Pledge Forms are @ the shelter or online www.Mohawkhumanesociety.org    For more information on any of the above you can call Terri Cook @ 434-1573 ext. 4 and/or Check out our website.

MENANDS CHEERLEADER TEAM
Registration for the Menands Cheerleader Team will be held on October 13th and October 18th – 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. at Menands School for girls in 3rd – 8th grades.  For more information call Kymberli Senecal 433-0951

MENANDS YOUTH BASKETBALL
Registration for the Menands Youth Basketball Program will be held on Thursday, October 13th and Tuesday, October 18th 6:30 – 7:30 PM at the Menands School – gym entrance.  Village of Menands Boys and Girls in Grades 3 thru 8 are invited to participate. Coaches are needed.  If interested, please call program director, Ed Malone

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH MEETING POSTPONED
All Menands residents be advised that the neighborhood watch meeting tentatively scheduled for the end of September, has been postponed to the end of October (date to be scheduled).  The reason is to allow Chief O’Brien to attend a State sponsored meeting on October 11, 2005 to learn the latest information and trends available to neighborhood watch groups, which will then be passed along at our meeting.

SPAGHETTI DINNER
Saturday, October 15th from 4:30-6:30 p.m., Bethany Presbyterian Church, 21 North Lyons Ave., Menands, is holding a Spaghetti Dinner featuring Lou Collen’s special homemade spaghetti sauce.  Eat-in or take-outs available.  Dinners cost $7 per person.  Proceeds will benefit Camp Hebron building fund.  Camp Hebron is a youth camp and conference center located in rural Washington County run by Albany Presbytery.  Over the years, many village youth have attended Camp Hebron through Bethany.  For information call 463-8217.

HALLOWEEN PARTY
The Village Halloween Party will be Monday,        October 31st.  The parade will start promptly at 6 pm from the Firehouse to Ganser Smith Park, the party will end at 8 pm.  There will be hay rides, hot dogs, hot chocolate and more!!  ***Volunteers are desperately needed to set up and clean up so please call Heather at 432-8521***

MENANDS PUBLIC LIBRARY
Happy 100th Birthday Henry Fonda
Every Tuesday at 1pm until November 22nd the Menands Public Library will be showing a film starring Henry Fonda.  The upcoming films are as follows:
October 11th -    MY DARLING CLEMENTINE
October 18th -    FORT APACHE
October 25th -    MISTER ROBERTS

MENANDS SENIOR CITIZENS
On Wednesday, November 2nd  the Club is taking a trip to Mohegan Sun to try our hands at  their games.  Then after we will enjoy “A Fantastic Musical Revue” and the Wright’s Farm delicious Champagne Buffet Dinner.  The cost is $39.00.  Bus will leave Bethany at 7:a.m.  For reservations, please call Flora Caswell at 434-0916.  Also the club will have its annual Christmas Party on Sunday, December 11th.  We will have good food, musical entertainment and will give away some very nice prizes.  Menu and cost will be in future issues of the Activities.  Festivities will begin at 4:00 p.m.  If interested, please call Flora Caswell at 434-0916 for information and reservations.  Don’t forget – you must be a member of a club to enjoy these trips.  If interested, stop in at Bethany Hall any Thursday’s from 10 to 2 p.m. for details and for any questions you might have regarding our Club.

HONORING SERVICE PERSONS
We would like to honor the Village of Menands residents who are in the Military.  Please contact the Village office with Name, mailing address and email address of the service person.  The information can be mailed to Village of Menands, 250 Broadway, Menands, NY 12204 or faxed at 427-7303.

REMINDER TO RESIDENTS
Residents are asked to keep debris and trash out of any creek on their property, as it can eventually clog the storm water drainage system.  Thank you for your cooperation with this important matter.  Brush and grass clippings are picked up by the Village.

JOHN WEIDMAN MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT
Thank you to all the golfers sponsors and to the committee that helped make this year’s event such a success.  $4,600 was raised and donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.  Special thanks to the Menands P.B.A. who donated a television that was raffled off.  Congratulations to this years champions;  Scott Murphy, Keith McNabb, Todd Swetowski, and Tony Merola

HEART FELT THANKS

ALBANY EVENING GARDEN CLUB
The program for 2005 – 2006 Albany Garden Club has been set as follows:
Tues., November 1st- @ 7 p.m. New ornament demonstration - Decorate tree.
Tues., December 6th - @ 6:30 p.m. – Make arrangements for the nursing homes – COOKIE EXCHANGE!! Please bring in 2 dozen cookies.
The meetings are held at the WC Littles Memorial Park at
7 p.m..  New members are welcome.
