ATTENTION RESIDENTS

Is your house number clearly visible from the street, both during the day and at night.  During an emergency seconds do count, so help out our Police & Emergency personnel to identify your house.  Information is available at the Police Station on E911 requirements.

VILLAGE OF MENANDS BOARD MEETING

The next regular meeting of the Menands Village Board will be Monday June 20, 2005 at 7 p.m. in the Village Municipal Building.  All meetings are handicapped assessible and open to the public.

DEDICATION FOR NEW PLAYGROUND

All are invited to attend the brief dedicaiton ceremonies Friday, June 17th at 7 p.m.for the the new playground installed at Ganser-Smith Park last December.  The Village Board and members of the Menands Parks Committee will lead a brief program.  Donor organizations will be recognized for their contributions for the new benches – to be installed around the perimeter of the new playground.  For further information call Ron Miller, Village Trustee at 463-8144.
RETIREMENT PARTY FOR
OFFICER PETER FORNER

Officer Peter Forner is retiring from the Menands Police Department in August of this year.  The PBA is throwing a retirement party for him on July 29th at the Polish American Club in Albany.  Anyone wishing to attend should RSVP to the PBA at 250 Broadway by July 12th.  Cost is $35 per person which includes the gift and a meal.  A cash bar will be available. Please Specify which dinner preferred.

STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL

Bethany Presbyterian Church is having its annual Strawberry Festival at Ganser-Smith Park on Menand Road Friday, June 17th from 4:00 p. m. to dusk.  There will be fresh picked strawberries for strawberry shortcake topped with fresh whipped cream or strawberries with ice cream.  We will also have char-broiled hamburgers and hotdogs, salads, baked beans and beverages.  Don’t forget to bring your lawn chair and “set” awhile and enjoy the toe tapping music of the Uncle Sam’s Barbershop Chorus of Troy and the Tri-County Banjo Band.  Bring the whole family.  Rain or shine!
SUMMER SOCCER CAMP

Soccer Camp at the Schuyler Flats hosted by the Watervliet Soccer Club.  Instruction will be provided by M.L.S. players from England.  Open to Children 5-13 years old.  Camp will be August 1st thru August 5th starting at 5 p.m. for more information contact Trisha Meachon at 271-6077

NEW RESTAURANT

C.J. Romano’s Family restaurant has opened at 698 North Pearl Street.  The menu consistsof American Pub style and Italian cuisine.  Open Monday thru Friday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. closed Sundays. Phone 463-0080; fax 463-0088.

MANY THANKS

We want to thank the many friends, neighbors, police and firemen who have extended their kindness and support for our family during this time of grief.  The wake and the funeral were a wonderful tribute.  Dick loved the village and it’s people.  Thanks for the memories.

Public Hearing
Zoning Board of Appeals

A public hearing will be held on Thursday June 30, 2005, at 7:00 p.m. in the Village Municipal Building for the purpose of considering the following applications for a variance.

                James Bolton, 1 Highland Street is requesting a variance of less than the required setback to build a storage building on his property.
 
Roger Collen of 224 Van Rensselaer Blvd is requesting to build a free standing garage at 224 Van Rensselaer Blvd.  A variance is requested from the code which states an accessory structure shall not exceed 15 feet.

Such hearings are open to the public and accessible to the handicapped.  All are encouraged to attend or to present comments in writing.

MENANDS SENIOR CITIZENS

Tuesday, June 28,  the Menands Senior Citizens Club will hold is annual picnic at Ganser-Smith Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Games and other activites are being planned.  Menu and cost will be included in the next issue of Menands Activites.
Tuesday, July 19th A trip to Cooperstown now has a waiting list.  However, if you wish to put your name on this list, please call Marion at 436-8207.  There will be picnic including all Clubs in Colonie on August 3rd at the Colonie Elks Pavilion.  Each Club has received 55 tickets.  Cost is $8.00.  For further information please call Gert Kutz at  462-1860 or Josephine Wells at 462-0944.
Also late in August there will be a 3 day trip to Lake Champlain with several shows, meals and lots of good things at a very good price.  For information, please call Flora Caswell at 434-0916.  
Just to update our activites on each Thursday at Bethany:  Thursday (with the exception of the 3rd Thursday) exercise class from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.  Third Thursday is Bingo.  From 11 a.m. to noon, we will handle all business matters such as trip reservations, payment for trips, membership dues, any and all questions pertaining to our Club and its guidelines.  Lunch at noon.  On the 4th Thursday after lunch we celebrate our monthy birthdays and conduct our monthly meeting.  Come join us – you’ ll enjoy yourslef.


TOWN OF COLONIE HOUSEHOLD
HAZARDOUS WASTE DROP OFF DAYS

You must pre-register by calling 1-800-494-2273              (9-5 p.m.).  Drop off events will be held at the Town of Colonie Landfill Site, 1319 New Loudon Rd. (Route 9), Cohoes on ,  July 16th 3 p.m - 6 p.m., Sept. 7 & Oct. 5th   4 p.m. – 7 p.m. &  Residents of the Town of Colonie will be admitted by appointment only.  Proof of residency will be required at the time of disposal.  A list of acceptable materials is available in the Village Office.

NOTICE FROM CHIEF O’BRIEN

        Residents are reminded that with the spring season upon us, to be alert for unsolicited contractors attempting to procure home improvement and repair work.  Residents should deal with only known and established contractors of proven reliability and reputation.  Any suspicious persons should be reported to the Police Department at any time.
ALSO there are still quantities of firearm locks available to Village Residents at no charge courtesy of Project Child Safe, a nationwide program promoting firearm safety.  
Locks can be obtained at the Police Department Communications section at any time.


VILLAGE PROPERTY TAXES
Keep an eye out for your Village property taxes, they were mailed out on May 31, 2005.  If you have not received them call the Village Office at 434-2922.


TRASH/RECYCLING/COMPOST PROGRAMS

Trash and Recyclables should be placed curbside no earlier than 6 p.m. the evening before your scheduled pick up.
Tires, wet paint, propane tanks, televisions and computer monitors and hazardous wastes are a few of the items the Village will not pick up.  Call the Town of Colonie Landfill (783-2827) for information regarding the disposal of these items.
If a Wednesday “special pick up” is needed for bulky items, call the Village Office (434-2922) at least 24 hours in advance.
It is the responsibility of your contractor to take away any building supplies or building debris from your property.
Leaves and grass clippings must be bagged or placed directly in a barrel (not to exceed 40 lbs.). The Village Crew will try to pick up Leaf Bags once a week.  There is no set schedule for this pick up.
Brush, limbs, etc. must be cut in approx. 3 ft. lengths and tied.



Items to be included in next edition of the Menands Activities, dated  July 1, 2005, must be received in the Village Office by 9 a.m. Monday, June 27th.
