VILLAGE BUDGET HEARING
The Budget Hearing for the 2005-2006 Village of Menands Annual Budget will be held in the Municipal Building, 250 Broadway, at 7:30 p.m. on  Monday, April 11, 2005.  All meetings are open to the public and handicap accessible.

ZONING BOARD OF APPEALS
A Public hearing will be held on Thursday,                April 14, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. in the Village Municipal Building for the purpose of considering the following application for a variance:
        Save A Lot, 100 Broadway, is requesting a variance for a sign permit.  Save A Lot is requesting relief from code allowances for store front wall signs, and permission to install a new pylon sign utilizing code setback allowances.
Such public hearings are open to the public and are accessible to the handicapped.  All are encouraged to attend or to present comments in writing.

TRASH/RECYCLING/COMPOST PROGRAMS
Trash and Recyclables should be placed curbside no earlier than 6 p.m. the evening before your scheduled pick up.
Tires, wet paint, propane tanks, televisions and computer monitors and hazardous wastes are a few of the items the Village will not pick up.  Call the Town of Colonie Landfill (783-2827) for information regarding the disposal of these items.
If a Wednesday “special pick up” is needed for bulky items, call the Village Office (434-2922) at least 24 hours in advance.
It is the responsibility of your contractor to take away any building supplies or building debris from your property.
Leaves and grass clippings must be bagged or placed directly in a barrel (not to exceed 40 lbs.). The Village Crew will try to pick up Leaf Bags once a week.  There is no set schedule for this pick up.
Brush, limbs, etc. must be cut in approx. 3 ft. lengths and tied.

TOWN OF COLONIE HOUSEHOLD
HAZARDOUS WASTE DROP OFF DAYS
You must pre-register by calling 1-800-494-2273 (9-5 p.m.).  Drop off events will be held at the Town of Colonie Landfill Site, 1319 New Loudon Rd. (Route 9), Cohoes on May 4, Sept. 7, Oct. 5th  4 p.m. – 7 p.m. &  July 16th         3 p.m - 6 p.m.  Residents of the Town of Colonie will be accepted by appointment only.  Proof of residency will be required at the time of disposal.  A list of acceptable materials is available in the Village Office.

MENANDS YOUTH BASKETBALL
Ed Malone, Menands Youth Basketball Director and basketball coach will offer skills development instruction to 8th Grade Village of Menands boys and girls who are interested in playing high school basketball.  The program will run from March through May.  Call Ed @ 462-9433 for more details.

YOUTH SUMMER PROGRAM

MENANDS LIBRARY SPRING FILM SERIES
Every Tuesday at 1pm until May 24th the Menands Public Library will be showing a film starring Dustin Hoffman. The upcoming films are as follows:  
April 12th – Kramer vs. Kramer
April 19th  - The Graduate
April 26th -  Little Big Man

MENANDS FIRE AUXILARY NEWS
Members of the Menands Fire Auxiliary are invited to attend a “Wine & Cheese” Party at the Menands Fire House on April 13, 2005 at 7:00 p.m.  Members are asked to bring wine or their favorite snack.  Come join the fun and get to know all your auxiliary members!

NOTICE FROM CHIEF O’BRIEN
        Residents are reminded that with the spring season upon us, to be alert for unsolicited contractors attempting to procure home improvement and repair work.  Residents should deal with only known and established contractors of proven reliability and reputation.  Any suspicious persons should be reported to the Police Department at any time.
ALSO there are still quantities of firearm locks available to Village Residents at no charge courtesy of Project Child Safe, a nationwide program promoting firearm safety.  Locks can be obtained at the Police Department Communications section at any time.

CONGRATULATIONS BRIAN HAYES
On March 26th Brian Hayes, of Kenmar Rd., won 1st place at the Ravena Coeymans Selkirk Wrestling Tournament.   He won first place in his section and weight for the Pee-Wee division, which is ages 5-6 .  Congratulations Brian!!

MOHAWK & HUDSON RIVER HUMANE SOCIETY UP COMING EVENTS

HERO’S NEEDED:
MENANDS ROTARY & MENANDS FIRE CO. #1
CO-SPONSOR BLOOD DRIVE
On Friday April 8th, from 1-6 p.m. on the second floor of the Menands Firehouse, the Menands Fire Co.#1 and the Rotary Club of Menands will sponsor a Red Cross Blood Drive.  There is a great need for blood; this blood drive gives Menands residents (and anyone who is willing to come to the Firehouse on April 8th) an opportunity to become a hero by donating this precious resource.  To schedule a donation appointment or obtain more information all you need to do is call 1-800-449-3543 and ask to be scheduled for the Menands, April 8th Drive.  One donation can save as many as three lives!  Please consider supporting this important community service effort.

ST. PATRICKS CLUB NEWS
Sunday, April 10th at 12:30p.m. There will be a St. Patricks Meeting to discuss the future of the club.  Anyone interested is welcome

TO THE QUALIFIED VOTERS OF THE MENANDS UNION FREE SCHOOL DISTRICT, TOWN OF COLONIE, ALBANY, NY:
Personal Registration will be on Wednesday,    May 11, 2005 from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the main lobby of the Menands School.  District residents registered with the County Board of Elections and who have voted once in the last four years need not register on May 11th.
A public hearing on the proposed 2005-2006 Budget for the Menands Union Free School District and the Menands Public Library shall be held at the Menands School on Monday, May 9, 2005 at 6:30 p.m.  The budgets will be available for review on May 2, 2005 at the Menands School Central Office.
The Annual Meeting of the qualified voters of the Menands Union Free School District, Village of Menands, will be held on Tuesday, May 17, 2005 between the hours of 12:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. in the Menands School, at which time the polls will be opened to vote by voting machine on the following items:
to adopt the annual budget of the Menands UFSD
to elect one Board of Education Member to a 5-year term
to elect one Board of Education Member to a 3-year term
to adopt the annual budget of the Menands  Public Library
to elect one Library Board of Trustee Member to a 5-year term
Nominating petitions for the Board of Education and Library Board of Trustees seats may be obtained from Patricia M. Miller, District Clerk, at Menands School.  Completed petitions are due by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, April 18, 2005.
Applications for absentee ballots will be obtainable between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday from the District Clerk at Menands School.  Completed applications for absentee ballots must be received by the District Clerk at least 7 days prior to the vote if the ballot is to mailed to the voter, or the day before the election if the ballot is to be delivered personally to the voter.  Absentee ballots must be received by the District Clerk not later than 5:00 p.m. on May 17, 2005.

MENANDS SCHOOL KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
If you are a resident of the Menands Union Free School District and have a child who will be 5 years old on or before December 1, 2005, please call the Menands School at 465-4561 to register for the upcoming school year.  You will be sent a registration packet in the mail.

ROTARY OFFERS DEFENSIVE DRIVING COURSE
The Rotary Club of Menands announces that we will offer this course once again on Saturday May 7th.  The NYS Department of Motor Vehicles approved Defensive Driving Course will be held on the second floor of the Village Fire House starting at 8:00 a.m. The cost of the course is still only $29.  Taking this class can lower your insurance costs and can effect any points you might have.  The Boy Scouts will offer lunch on the day of the Class.  Class size is limited and advance reservations are suggested.   To make a reservation or if you have any questions contact Peter Mason (449-8711).

MENANDS SENIOR CITIZENS
Monday, May 16th – the Club will take a trip to West Point where we will have a guided tour of the Point, lunch at the Hotel Thayer and a boat ride on the Hudson River.  Cost - $48.00.  For reservations, please call Arnold Hamm at   869-3020.  The Bus will leave Bethany at 7:15 a.m.
We also have a tentative plans for trips in June and July.  Information will be forthcoming in future issues of Menands Activities.
REMINDER;  Don’t forget – we have our weekly meetings at Bethany every Thursday from 10 a.m.  to
2 p.m. Play Bingo every third Thursday and exercise class on the other Thursdays of the Month.  Also we have a monthly meeting on the fourth Thursday.  Come and join us – we have a good time

Items to be included in next edition of the Menands Activities, dated April 22, 2005, must be received in the Village Office by 9 a.m. Monday, April 18th
