HAPPY AUTUMN
VILLAGE BOARD MEETING
The next regular Village Board Meeting will be held in the Village Municipal Building on Monday, October 4, 2004 at 7 p.m. All meetings are open to the public and handicapped accessible.
BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE MEETING
There will be a Beautification Meeting on Tuesday, September 28th at Lynda Long’s home, 72 Menand Road at 7 p.m. Please come and share your ideas!
MENANDS YOUTH BASKETBALL
COACHES NEEDED
Volunteer coaches are needed for Boys and Girls Menands Youth Basketball teams. The season starts in late October. Coaching assistance and training is provided. Call Ed Malone, Program Director, for more information (462-9433).
BASKETBALL & CHEERLEADING REGISTRATION
Registration will be held Wednesday, October 13th and Thursday, October 21st at the Menands School gym entrance. Village of Menands Boys and girls in 3rd – 8th grades are invited to participate in the basketball program. NEW THIS SEASON: Basketball Cheerleader Team for Village of Menands girls in 5th thru 8th grade. Call Ed Malone for more information.
MENANDS PUBLIC LIBRARY NEWS
FALL STORY HOUR
Get ready to fall into some good books. On Mondays at 10 a.m., come to the Library for stories, songs, a craft and a snack. 2004 dates are Sept. 20, 27; Oct. 4, 18, 25; Nov. 1, 8, 15, 22; Dec. 6, 13 and 20th.
CHESS CLUB
The Library is hosting a Chess Club on the fourth Thursday of every month (except holidays) beginning September 23rd from 7 – 8 p.m. Fun for everyone, experienced or inexperienced. Stop by to play a few games!
AMERICAN CINEMA & POLITICS
On Thursday afternoons at 1 p.m., the Menands Public Library continues a series of films that examine the American political system. The series will run from until November 18th. The next two films are:
September 30th – STATE OF THE UNION (Innocence corrupted) and October 7th – THE LAST HURRAH (The professional politician).
MENANDS SENIOR CITIZENS
The Menands Senior Citizens Club will hold its Annual Fall Dinner on Tuesday, October 12, 2004 at 6:00 p.m. at the Watervliet Elks. Cost - $15.00 For further information and reservations, please call Flora Caswell at 434-0916.
On Wednesday, November 29th, the Club will travel to the Log Cabin in Holyoke, MA to enjoy a program with Carol Channing. Further details will be in upcoming Activities.

The Menands School PTA would like to thank everyone who helped support our annual Mum sale with your recent purchases. The fundraiser was a huge success and the Village looks beautiful with all the colorful mums.
ENTERTAINMENT/VALUES BOOKS
The Menands School PTA is now selling Entertainment Books ($40) and Values Books ($20) to raise funds for our Visiting Author/Artist Program. DEFENSIVE DRIVING COURSE SAT., OCT. 30TH
Because of the success of our Spring Defensive Driving Course, we are offering this course again on Saturday, October 30th. The NYS DMV approved 6-hr. course will be held on the 2nd floor of the Menands Firehouse from 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. The cost is only $29 and class size is limited. The sponsoring agency is Empire Safety Council and the Delivery Agent is Bri-Care Inc. To reserve a place, send your check (payable to Bri-Care Inc) to Mel Horowitz, 200 Van Rensselaer Blvd., Menands, NY 12204. Taking this class will lower your insurance costs and may effect any points you might have. We have arranged for an additional service which can lead to an additional discount. In partnership with Peter Mason’s
Nationwide Insurance Agency and Safelite, we will also offer FREE glass etching. To take advantage of this we will need your full name and VIN number. Menands Fire Co. will offer lunch on the day of class. If you have any questions, contact Mel at 449-8817.

A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING THE GRATITUDE OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES AND THE PEOPLE OF THE VILLAGE OF MENANDS TO EDWARD MALONE FOR HIS MANY CONTRIBUTIONS TO HIS COMMUNITY.
WHEREAS, Edward Malone, a resident of the Village of Menands, has recently completed ten years as Program Director for the Menands Youth Basketball League, and
WHEREAS, shortly after moving his family to the Village of Menands in 1992, Ed Malone volunteered to coach the "Biddy" boys teams and, in 1993, Ed was named the Menands Youth Basketball League's Program Director while continuing to coach the junior boys, and
WHEREAS, from 1993 to 1997, Ed was instrumental in expanding the League to include third and fourth grade boys and girls, and
WHEREAS, due to Ed's diligent efforts, many volunteer coaches have been recruited and trained, and
WHEREAS, Ed has coordinated annual registrations, the ordering of uniforms and supplies, as well as assigning referees for each and every basketball game, and
WHEREAS, fundraising efforts for a new basketball scoreboard will soon begin, under Ed's direction, and
WHEREAS, the program that Ed has directed for over ten years provides a safe environment and provides skill development and teamwork for our Village youth
NOW, THEREFORE, be it
RESOLVED, that we, the members of this Board, personally and on behalf of the citizens of this Village, extend our most sincere thanks and grateful appreciation to Edward Malone, not only for his sound judgment and diligent effort in attending to the affairs of the youth of Village of Menands, but also for his personal commitment to a better society and we do, further, unreservedly extend to him our heartfelt thanks and best wishes, and be it further
RESOLVED, that the Clerk-Treasurer be, and he hereby is, directed to cause this resolution to be published in the Menands Activities and to transmit a certified copy hereof to Edward Malone, and be it further
RESOLVED, that, when this meeting adjourns, it do so in appreciation of the services so generously rendered to the young residents of Village of Menands by our friend, Edward Malone.
CONGRATULATIONS
Menands resident Michael McMahon recently retired from the Veterans Administration Hospital in Albany. He served as the Director of Training as well as the lead alcohol and substance abuse counselor. His work included outreach programs to incarcerated veterans in maximum and medium security correctional facilities throughout the state. Mike was recently honored, receiving several certificates of achievement and Congressman Michael McNulty presented him with a flag, which was flown over the White House. Congratulations, Mike.
