VILLAGE BOARD MEETING
The next regular Village Board meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, November 1, 2004.  The tentative agenda will include a proposed water rate increase.  All meetings are open to the public and handicapped accessible.

LEAF VACUUM
The Village DPW will begin vacuuming leaves during the week of October 25th and  continue until further notice.
LEAVES ONLY must be raked to the side of the road for pick up.  Biodegradable Bags for leaves and grass clippings will continue to be collected.

ELECTION DAY – TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 2ND
The Village Office will be closed on Election Day, Tuesday, November 2nd .  All other Village services will be normal.

NOVEMBER “SPECIAL PICK UP” SCHEDULE
Due to the observance of Veteran’s Day on November 11th and Thanksgiving on November 25th , there will be only  two (2) Special Trash Pick Up Days in November: NOVEMBER 3rd and NOVEMBER 17th .   Please plan accordingly.

ELECTION DAY BAKE SALES
SCHEDULED AT POLLING PLACES
Menands School 8th Grade
The Menands School 8th Grade will hold a Bake Sale on Election Day (November 2nd) at Menands School beginning at 9:00 a.m.  Baked good donations gladly accepted!
Menands Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary
The Annual Election Day Bake Sale will be held at the Menands Firehouse on Tuesday, November 2nd from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  All members are asked to bring their baked goods in early!    Donations will be greatly appreciated!

PLAYGROUND IMPROVEMENT COMMITTEE
PUBLIC INFORMATION MEETING
      On Wednesday, October 27, 2004 at 7 p.m., everyone is invited to an informational meeting at the Village Hall where you are invited to listen and ask questions about the Parks Master Plans:
Ganser-Smith Park:
      New and enlarged playground facility
      Upgraded pavilion
      A performance band shell/gazebo
      Overall Master Plan & other improvements
Kingston Street Neighborhood Park:
      Small Playground
      Benches/Picnic Tables
      New Landscape/Lighting
The Village’s Landscape Architecture and Planning Consultant, ELAN Planning & Design, will discuss the Parks improvement plans.     The final plan will be presented to the Village Board for adoption.

MENANDS ROTARY/MENANDS FIRE CO.
RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE
On Wednesday, October 27th, from 2 –7 p.m. on the second floor of the Menands Firehouse, the Menands Fire Co. #1 and Menands Rotary will sponsor a Red Cross Blood Drive.  There is a great need for blood and this blood drive gives Menands residents (and anyone who is willing to come to the Firehouse on October 27th) an opportunity to become a hero by donating this precious resource.  To schedule a donation appointment or obtain more information all you need to do is call 1-800-448-3543 and  ask to be scheduled for the Menands Blood Drive on Oct. 27th.  One donation can save as many as three lives!  Please consider supporting this important community service effort.  BECOME A HERO!  We hope that many of you will make this call NOW so that we can reach our goal of FIFTY people!  Make that call today!


BETHANY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
LASAGNA DINNER – THIS FRIDAY
Bethany is sponsoring a Lasagna Dinner on Friday, October 22nd from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.  in Bethany Hall (corner of Lyons Avenue and Menand Road). Adults $7, Children $3 (aged 3-12).  Lasagna, Italian green beans, salad, bread, beverage and apple cake for dessert.

     Bethany’s Annual Christmas Bazaar will be held on Saturday, November 20th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Crafts, knit items, bake sale, Christmas & fall decorations and unique white elephant items will be available.  All are welcome!  

ROTARY OFFERS DEFENSIVE DRIVING COURSE
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 30TH
The NYS Dept. of Motor Vehicles-approved 6-hour Defensive Driving course will be offered once again on Saturday, October 30th at the Menands Firehouse (2nd floor) from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.  The cost is only $29 and class size is limited.  The sponsoring agency is Empire Safety Council and the Delivery Agent is Bri-Care, Inc.  To reserve a place, send a check (payable to Bri-Care Inc.) to Mel Horowitz, 200 Van Rensselaer Blvd., Menands, NY 12204.  Taking this class can lower your insurance costs and effect any points you might have.  For those interested we have arranged for an additional service which can lead to an additional discount.  In partnership with Peter Mason’s Nationwide Insurance Agency and Safelite we will also offer FREE glass etching (will be done while you take the class).  To take advantage, you must phone Peter Mason Agency (449-8711) no later than October 22 to provide him with your VIN number.  Those who have previously registered must also phone him with this information.  Menands Fire Co. #1 will offer lunch on the day of the class.  If you have any questions, contact Mel Horowitz (449-8817).

ANNUAL VILLAGE HALLOWEEN PARTY
Attention all goblins, ghouls & witches: Halloween will be here in no time.  On Sunday, October 31st, the Village Youth Committee will hold the Annual Halloween Parade to Ganser-Smith Park.  The Parade will start at 5:30 p.m. from the Menands Firehouse and the party at the park will end at 8:30 p.m.  Lots of fun, carriage rides and great refreshments.  If you can help with decorating, please call Heather at 432-8521.

PETER TEZBIR HONORED
On October 6th, Village resident Peter Tezbir was presented with a Senior Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the Capital District Senior Issues Forum.  The award is given to those individuals who represent outstanding examples of the triumph of the advances of medical science, vocational and educational changes of the past decades, and the contributions of our older generation to the success of our country.  Peter was honored for his sixty years of service to the community of St. Ambrose Church as well as his former service as a driver for the American Cancer Society.  For more than 25 years he has been a member of the Menands Volunteer Fire Department where he has served in various capacities.  In addition to the Lifetime Achievement Award, Peter also received letters of recognition and certificates from various state and local officials.  

MENANDS SENIOR CITIZENS
TO SEE CAROL CHANNING
On Monday, November 29th, the Club will travel to the Log Cabin in Holyoke, MA to see and hear Carol Channing in concert.  Cost $55.00.  For reservations, call Flora at 434-0916.   On Sunday, December 5th, the Club will hold their Annual Christmas Party at the Menands Firehouse.  Time 4:00 p.m.  Further details to follow.
REMINDER: If you have not paid dues for the current year, we would appreciate receiving them.  We are at Bethany Hall every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  All residents over 60 are invited to attend all senior functions.

MAYOR JOHN WEIDMAN
GOLF TOURNAMENT RESULTS
The winning foursome in this annual tournament included Ray Smith, Kevin Smith, Mike Murphy and Tom Robertson.  The corporate winner was Satch Sales.  Congratulations to all!  Over $2,000 was raised to benefit Menands School students.  A special thank you to John M. Murphy and his committee for their hard work in making this tournament so successful year after year!

The Menands School PTA is now selling Entertainment Books ($40) and Values Books ($20) to raise funds for our Visiting Author/Artist Program. FALL STORY HOUR
Get ready to fall into some good books.  On Mondays at 10 a.m., come to the Library for stories, songs, a craft and a snack.  Upcoming dates are  Oct. 25; Nov. 1, 8, 15, 22; Dec. 6, 13 and 20th.

AMERICAN CINEMA & POLITICS
The last four films to be shown at the Menands Library (1 p.m.):

HOLIDAY SCHEDULE CHANGES
Due to the observance of Columbus Day, the Village Office will be closed on Monday, October 11th and there will be no trash pick up.  Monday’s trash pick up will be Tuesday, October 12th and Tuesday’s pick up will be Wednesday, October 13th.  There will be no special pick up on Wednesday.

VILLAGE  OF MENANDS PUBLIC HEARING
& REGULAR VILLAGE BOARD MEETING
    Notice is hereby given that a public hearing will be held by the Board of Trustees in the meeting room on the second floor of the Menands Firehouse at 7:30 p.m. on October 18, 2004 upon the questions of the enactment of the following Local Law:  
A LOCAL LAW OF THE VILLAGE OF MENANDS AMENDING SECTION 135-58 RELATING TO SEWER RENTS, IN RELATION TO THE RATE THEREOF.
     The regular Village Board Meeting will be held immediately following the public hearing.  All meetings are open to the public and handicapped accessible.

ZONING BOARD OF APPEALS
A public hearing will be held at  7:00 p.m. on October 14, 2004 in the Village Municipal Building to consider a variance application from Richard Rendert who is wishes to subdivide his property at 350–354 Broadway.  All are encouraged to attend or present comments in writing.

MENANDS FIRE CO. LADIES AUXILIARY
The next regular meeting of the Fire Auxiliary will be Wednesday, October 13, 2004 at 7:00 P.M. in the Menands Firehouse. We will be having a scrap booking activity after the meeting and each member should bring four photographs to be used for the activity.  The Auxiliary will be handing out goodie bags to the children at the Halloween Parade and we are asking that members bring one bag of wrapped candy so we can have an assortment to fill the bags.  All members are urged to attend.

MENANDS UNION FREE SCHOOL DISTRICT
    The Board of Education of the Menands Union Free School District welcomes parents, community members and civic organizations to participate in an open forum on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 at 6:30 p.m. at the Menands School to receive input regarding our Superintendent/Principal search.
    The next regular Board of Education meeting will be held Tuesday, October 12, 2004 at 6:30 p.m. in the main foyer.  This meeting is open to the public and handicap accessible.  Agenda item are posted on the Menands School web site.
    The Board of Education will hold a workshop on Monday, October 25, 2004 at 5:30 p.m.  Agenda: Executive Session to discuss a legal issue.

ANNUAL VILLAGE HALLOWEEN PARTY

We are offering this course on Saturday, October 30th.  The NYS DMV approved 6-hr. course will be held on the 2nd floor of the Menands Firehouse from 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.  The cost is only $29 and class size is limited. CHESS CLUB REMINDER
Fourth Thursday of every month (except holidays) from 7 – 8 p.m. at the Menands Public Library.  This Club will run through May 26, 2005. Stop by to play a few games!

AMERICAN CINEMA & POLITICS
On Thursday afternoons at 1 p.m., the Menands Public Library continues a series of films that examine the American political system.  The series will run from until November 18th.  The next two films are:
Oct. 7th – THE LAST HURRAH (The professional politician); Oct. 14th – THE BEST MAN (How party conventions used to be); Oct. 21st – PRIMARY COLORS  (How we pick our presidents today) Rated “R”.
