A MESSAGE FROM THE FIRE CHIEF
Menands Fire Company #1 Inc., was established in 1924. The original firehouse still stands today on Railroad Avenue and has since been converted into a garage. There have been many changes to the department over the years. However, our mission to preserve life and property has remained unchanged throughout the existence of the company.
At one time there had been a waiting list to join the department, which had 100 active members. Unfortunately, as with other volunteer companies in recent years, the fire company has seen a reduction in membership. The department is currently run with 30 active members, consisting of 8 fire police and 22 active fire fighters. Still, the company remains very active. In 2003, the we responded to over 270 calls. The department not only responds to fire calls and alarm drops, but also to personal injury and motor vehicle accidents, rescue calls, and hazardous materials calls. We also assist both Colonie EMS and the Menands Police Department as necessary.
In 2004, the fire department, with approval from the Village Board, adopted a Junior Fire Fighter program for young adults aged 16 to 18 interested in joining. The program allows for these young members to complete the state required training before their 18th birthday, so when that day comes, they may become active firefighter s almost immediately. The training required to become an active fire fighter is as follows:
Firefighter I Training - 120 Hours
Firefighter II Training - 80 hours
In addition to responding to dispatched fire calls, active duty members meet on a weekly basis for drill, meetings or functions. This service earns firefighter points toward the state fire fighters service awards program. This award program provides volunteer fire fighters with a small pension upon retirement.
The Menands Fire Department is rich in tradition. Each year, the company participates in many community events, such as the annual Village Picnic and the Halloween Parade. Throughout the year, the department sponsors many social events, such as Ladies Night, the annual fire company picnic, and the Christmas party. Members also march in several area parades each year. Other events are conducted to honor our members, such as the our annual memorial service, Life Members Night, and the Installation of Elected Officers Dinner.
This year, the fire department will be working extra hard to better serve the residents of the Village of Menands by becoming even more involved in community events. We are always seeking interested, and dedicated people to serve as members. If you work or live in the Village of Menands and would like to look into volunteering as a member of the Menands Fire Company #1, please stop by the Menands Village Office for an application or, call Fire Chief Frank Primo at 376-7982.
There is a BURNING need for your help!
