Ø Is the Fire Department paid or volunteer?
The Menands Fire Department is 100% volunteer and is always looking for new members.
Ø How do I become a member of the Menands Fire Department?
You can either stop by the Police Department for an application or call Fire Chief Don Handerhan at 376-7982 to arrange a meeting.
Ø Does being a member take a lot of time?
Not really. There is drill once a week for approximately 2 hours and company meeting once a month. The training you will need takes the most time Fire Fighter 1 & 2 take approximately 200 hours over a period of time. And going to fire calls as the need arises.
Ø Do I have to pay for training or equipment?
No. The department takes care of all training cost and equipment needed to keep you safe.
Ø Is Menands Fire Department only looking for Fire Fighters?
No. We are accepting application for Fire Fighters, Fire Police, Junior Fire Fighters and Ladies Auxiliary.
Ø What is a Junior Fire Fighter?
A young adult between the ages of 16 and 18 with parental consent may become a junior fire fighter. They go through all the training, but until they are 18 years of age may not go into a hazardous area until it is deemed safe by the officer in charge.
Ø Is the Fire Department is only involved with emergencies?
No. There is a social side to involve annual picnic, parades, Christmas party, Ladies Night to mention a few. The Department also get involved with community events.
